It is a big gathering of people to view many different types of exhibits. The historical name is The World’s Fair, but modern culture prefers the term ‘expo’ instead of ‘fair’. It used to be a majestic show full of wonder and inventions, but it has evolved in the message it portrays. The World’s Fair has grown quite irrelevant with newer technology such as the internet. Gustave Eiffel introduced the amazing Eiffel Tower at this expo. Thomas Edison said of the Fair, “It is simply overwhelming, and the Eiffel Tower surpasses anything I had imagined”(Jonnes 207). Of course with a tower that big, Mr. Eiffel encountered many new features and many problems while building it. The tower was equipped with a whole new type of elevator that would not work because it was the very first time this type of elevator was implemented into a building. There were still a few kinks that needed to be ironed out (Jonnes 127-128). Some Parisians did not approve of the Eiffel Tower at first, but they must be proud to have it in their city now. Some people say these expos are completely irrelevant because of today’s resources that allow them to research anything in the quiet of their own homes. “I don’t know today how a World’s Fair can be viable, because everybody has a camera in their pocket,” says Louise Weinberg, World’s Fair Archive Manager at Queens Museum. “Running a Fair is a losing proposition, you don’t do it to make money,” she adds. The cities that host the fairs put so much money into them that they just cannot net any profit. The internet, television, and books all play a big part in the World’s Fair becoming irrelevant. These all take away from the uniqueness of being one of the few to witness the exhibits at the fair (Swartout). By using resources at home a potential fairgoer will save money on gas or an airline
