My Ride with the Polar Express We all have a favorite book as a kid. We would or have someone read it to us over and over again. We would know every part, but hearing the words just made us feel at home. My book was The Polar Express written by Chris Van Allsburg. The Polar Express was my favorite book year around even if it wasn’t close to Christmas. In case you didn’t know, The Polar express is about a boy who had doubts about the existence of Santa Clause. On the night of Christmas eve, a train appears in front of his house with a conductor saying the train goes to the north pole. It is also close to Christmas so it made the movie have even more hype. I thought I’d know every word to the movie, but of course I’m wrong. I learn pretty quick that books are a lot better than movies as the characters and plot were totally different from what I imagined. Regardless of those things I still smile widely when I see the long black train. The train that would take every kid where he or she wanted to go most. The north pole is also different from what I imagined, but still has the magical feeling about it. After the movie, the one thing that the movie and my imagination had in common was the train itself. If I could just get a train that would look just like it I would adore it for as long as I live. When the movie came out there were a lot of promotions going on. Mostly around kid items: toys, marketing with fast food places, advertisements on kid’s TV shows, etc. One I was attracted to the most was a prize of a model train of the Polar Express. It was offered by Kraft and what you had to do is send in 5 cut outs from the box of mac and cheese to Kraft and then you would receive the model train.
