The Great Wall Of China The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous architectural structures in the history of the world. The wall took over thousands of years to build, starting with the Emperor Qin Shi Huang in c. 259-210 B.C (History). Of course, this means that the early parts of the wall are now deteriorated due to no one renovating them. If one were to visit The Great Wall Of China, they would most likely visit the section built during the Ming dynasty in 1368-1644 (History). In 1421, the Ming emperor Yongle proclaimed China’s new capital, Beijing, on the site of the former Mongol city of Dadu. Under the strong hand of the Ming rulers, Chinese culture flourished, and the period saw an immense amount of construction in addition to the Great Wall, including bridges, temples and pagodas. The construction of the Great Wall as it is known today began around 1474. After an initial phase of territorial expansion, Ming rulers took a largely defensive stance, and their reformation and extension of the Great Wall was key to this strategy" (History). This explains on why certain parts of the Great Wall look better than others. According to China Highlight's article, "the official length is 21,196.18 km (13,170.7 mi) — (6+ dynasties' worth)" (Kelly). If one were to go, they would see a very long wall, with some areas probably unreachable due to how far the wall goes. Also, Badaling is the most visited section (63,000,000 visitors in 2001). And in the first week of May and October, the visitor flow can be up to 70,000 per day (Kelly). This means that if one were to go, there would be a lot of tourist and locals visiting the wall.
