Skateboarding is Truly an Art Form
“I feel like skateboarding is as much of a sport as a lifestyle, and an art form, so there's so much that that transcends in terms of music, fashion, and entertainment” Tony Hawk. To a skater this would mean skateboarding isn’t just a sport. But also a type of art form. To some people skateboarding is a sport, to others it may be a hobby, or a lifestyle, but it’s really an art form because it allows for individual expression.
Skateboarding is an art form because it allows individuals to express themselves in another way a lot of people can not seem to do. A skateboarder is free to skate in any area he or she encounters. That goes for skating on the streets,

A lot of skaters prefer to skateboard with music. It sometimes allows them to stay relaxed, and mellowed out while they are on a board. Since skateboards were produced in the 1950’s, it has become a culture of own, including music. Just like ballet is tied to classical music in the same way, skateboarding is linked to hip hop and rap. In fact, “by the late 1980’s, skateboarding was associated with bands such as Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax, INXS and Faith No More…” (Davis). Most skaters today prefer rap, mellow rock, or even hip hop. In due time,“As the 1960’s turned into the 1980’s and dance music began to be represented more often” (Davis). More skaters started listening to rap and hip hop in the late 1980’s. Music is important to a lot of skaters because it keeps them focused, chilled out, or even down to earth. With rap, hip hop, or mellow rock, one is a calmer skater. Some skaters like listening to music while they skate because they have a type of flow by which to skate and do tricks too. Believe it or not, skaters can stay on beat with types of music as they are doing their tricks, riding, or even just cruising around. Like a dancer that has choreographed moves to music, the flow of the songs, the beats, lyrics, bass, etc is what helps a lot of skaters stay calm and mellowed out while they're skating, or even repetitive competing in a competition. If the beat is on point, they can do every …show more content…
“By the late 1990’s, DC Shoes were one of the few companies who seemed to be able to cope with mainstream success while retaining their integrity. They had a large line of shoes in different styles, but, even more importantly, their skate team consisted of some of the most popular and talented skaters of the most popular and talented skaters of the previous ten years, such as Danny Way, Colin Mckay, Mike Carroll and Rick Howard” (Davis). DC shoes aren’t really that big anymore in the skating world. The most popular brand name today is Diamond Supply, Nike SB, and Vans. Just because one may see someone wearing a certain skate brand doesn’t technically mean they skate. Being a skater isn’t in what you wear. It’s a lifestyle that people really enjoy doing. Wearing a name brand doesn’t automatically label one as a skater. Being a skater involves actually being on a skateboard and doing tricks. Certain clothing people buy can express their personality and creativity in many different ways but it is not the clothes that makes the

As skateboarding evolved, it was once something kids do in their free time, later became a prospering sport. This started many new changes to our local cities. “No skateboarding” signs are being posted places that skateboarders would go to practice. Architects are finding new ways to redesign structures like benches and handrails in the city, in order to lower the abundance of skateboarder in an area. All these changes have resulted in a good amount of money spent redoing everything to prevent skateboarding, but nothing is being done to give skateboarders a safe place to skate. For young teens whose only transportation is a skateboard, they can only travel so far, and skateparks are not close enough. To eliminate the amount of skateboarders in heavily populated areas, I propose that cities invest more money into building skateparks so skateboarders have a safe place to practice the sport.
People put the label “thug” on skateboarders, but do skaters really gang bang? No they don’t, they just wear baggy clothes and ride around with a skateboard so that brings the wrong perspective to someone. People also put the moto “skateboarders are stoners and have no job” but that is not the case as skateboarders have many other talents like painting and a skateboarder claimed, “Toy Machine decks are painted by Ed as a way to show his artistic ability. He said that he got into painting because he liked it even though he said his first paintings were crapy. He said it was better than getting into drugs and that he really doesn’t drink.”
We also meet Tony Hawk; the man behind the phenomenon of Tony Hawk, Inc. Tony has been the greatest influence in the success of the skateboarding industry. Generations of kids look up to him as an inspiration to emulate. He has retained his childlike enthusiasm for his sport and becomes quite the executive. He manages to maintain his appeal with the young skater by staying true to the sport. Much of Hawk’s fame stems from his perfectionist attitude toward skating. He trains and practices several hours just to perfect a new trick. Because of his dedication, the skateboarding life...
For many individuals, skateboarding is an exciting and fun activity to participate in. Both children and adults have incorporated the sport into their lives recreationally or as a serious lifetime occupation. There are many reasons to why skateboarding can be a positive and rewarding experience for just about anyone. However, there are many individuals that find the sport to be dangerous and argue for its ban with flimsy opinions. The city should not pass a ban against skateboarders on all public property as there is no concrete argument on why their activities are harmful to such an extent; banning the sport would not only result in outrage from the abridgement of civil liberties and be an injustice to the diversity of our country, but force
“Hip hop has been named the most influential musical genre to emerge since 1960, beating the British invasion of the Rolling Stones and The Beatles, soul, punk, prog rock, heavy metal, disco and many more in a new study” (Von Radowitz and Webb).
Did you know that Alan Gelfand was the one who invented or created the ollie. “The ‘Secret History’ Of Skateboarding’s Most Fundamental Trick” Alan really didn’t even mean to create the ollie in the first place. He was actually trying to do a lipslide with his friend Jeff but instead he did what his friend called an “ollie pop”. Soon after that word got around that Alan created the new trick called the ollie. After that, Alan was asked to be photographed doing his brand new trick the ollie. And then not long
“Hopefully, kids realize you can do anything you want. Skateboarding can be that gateway.” - Ryan Sheckler. Sheckler meant that skateboarding is more than a sport, skateboarding is way of life and it can take people wherever they want to go. The culture of skateboarding has been taking over the world because anyone can do it no matter what their background, ethnicity, or body shape. This way of life is art form that is expressed through style and maneuvers on a piece of wood with wheels. Skateboarding has become one of the most popular extreme sports in the past few decades. In 2009 there was an estimated 9,281,500 skateboarders in the United States and that number continues to grow each year (“Who Are Skateboarders”). Why then are skateboarders
Depending on how much you skate and how intense you are skating you could burn anywhere from one hundred fifty to five hundred calories (Health Fitness Revolution). Skateboarding can also help your legs, ankles, and feet become more flexible in your joints (Health Fitness Revolution). Also skateboarding helps you learn how to “bail” or “roll out” of a sketchy situation while skating, this helps you learn to fall without getting seriously injured (Health Fitness Revolution). Skateboarding also can help you build up your endurance because the longer you skate the longer you can actually handle skating no one is done in a couple minutes (Health Fitness Revolution). Overall skateboarding helps with most physical activity and exercise, also skateboarding decreases the chance of high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity (Health Fitness
Hip Hop and Rock music are today’s people choice of music. People will find that teens and adults from the age of 20 to 34 listen to these two types of music. Not too often will you see or hear a teen listening to Blues, Opera, Reggae, or Oldies. Reason being is that they were raised up in toady’s society where really all they will here is either Hip Hop or Rock. There is a lot of argument that these two different types of music are the same old sing about money, drugs, and sex. But actually they are tot...
Skaters. They are the typical representation of the grunge culture of the ‘90s. Extremely wide pants, pockets that go to the back of their knees, extravagant piercings, intricate tattoos, and twenty-fourth century hair dos are just part of the looks that these so called “grungy people” are made of. Or at least they were when the grunge phenomenon started. With the death of Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, the grunge movement seems to have slowed down and even—as some say—disappeared from the main stream pop culture. As we all know, those commercial creations often come and go without us even noticing them. But grunge, I think, has moved to a different direction, one that can trick us into thinking it is gone. Grunge is still among our youngsters, and that is for sure; it is just not as noticeable as is used to be. But, what is exactly grunge and what direction is it taking?
