Jack Sparrow: Hero or Villain? Pirates are often portrayed in movies and books as the villains. They are your classic villains, thieves, mutineers; pure evil. When people say “pirate” this image comes to our mind, a large man with long tangled, black hair, an eyepatch, a peg leg, or a hook; he swings a sword and says “Give me your loot!”This image, however, is not the image of pirate captain, Jack Sparrow, from The Pirates of the Caribbean. He is the most interesting character I have ever encountered, in books and movies. He is not quite good, but he is not quite bad either. Jack Sparrow can, and does, play for both sides in the movie, and this is one of the reasons I find him so interesting. At the harbor, he risks his life to save Elizabeth Swan, the daughter of the governor. Despite his heroic actions, he is still imprisoned for piracy. After Elizabeth is kidnapped by his old crew, Sparrow agrees to help Will Turner save her, beginning a long quest to the secret pirate hideout, Isla de Muerta. Over the course of the movie, Jack Sparrow seems to help both sides. He helps Will Turner Save Elizabeth, but he also helps the pirates capture the greatest ship in the British Navy. By the end of the movie, it is clear that Jack Sparrow is a hero. Sparrow is clever and capable of thinking fast. When faced with the problem of acquiring a fast ship, he quickly devised a plan to double-bluff the Navy and acquire their fastest ship. He then goes on to outthink Captain Barbarossa. His ingenuity and quick thinking, got him and Will out of trouble countless times throughout their adventure. Even when faced with the most difficult challenges, Jack Sparrow always has a plan to
