Pirates are the most devious, mysterious, harsh fighters who were active in the Caribbean in the 1600s. They had to battle on ships, deal with natural causes, and deal with other pirates. There are two types of pirates, privateers and buccaneers. Privateers were pirates sent by the government. It was basically a legal form of piracy. Buccaneers were pirates that were not controlled by the government. They raided illegally and were charged with treason. Pirates were around during the exploration of the Caribbean. Pirates were battling for others wealth, for a hope of a higher lifestyle. When most people think about pirates they think of flags, shipwrecks, ragged clothing, and dirty men. about them. A pirate’s world is very specific and organized. Pirates have codes, laws, ship flags, and laws on how someone should die. Pirates were always on some sort of a mission to find a hidden treasure, or to steal another ships weapons. In the movie the “Pirates of Caribbean”, these rules apply in all aspects of a pirate’s lifestyle. Most of these rules are shown in the movie. Some people debate if the movie is historically accurate. Although some things are exaggerated, the movie gives the audience a pretty good taste on what it takes to be a pirate. In the movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” the main character, Captain Jack Sparrow is for the most part based off historically accurate pirates who lived their legacies in the promising 17th century.
Jack Sparrow, who is played by Johnny Depp in the film, has many similarities with various pirates, all of which are considered to be of the most daring, mysterious criminals in pirate history. Although Jack Sparrow is not a sole image of just one pirate, his qualities and distinguishing traits represent those of many distinct pirates. In the film, Captain Jack Sparrow’s ship is named “The Black Pearl”, which is most likely based off of Edward England’s ship, “The Pearl. ” Jack Sparrow is most active in the Caribbean like most other pirates, more specifically resembling Bart Roberts and Stede Bonnet in this important aspect of pirate life. Jack Rackham, also known as Calico Jack, was the only pirate of his time to allow women aboard his ship in which Jack Sparrow did as well. Aside from many inner pirate qualities Jack Sparrow also shares multiple physical traits with other pirates. He is English like Blackbeard, Edward Low, Henry Jennings, and Thomas Tew. Jack Sparrow also has dreadlocks in the film just like Blackbeard and Henry Every. Finally, Jack Sparrow is a flashy dresser and very popular with women, resembling John Rackham and Bart Roberts. In Conclusion, “Pirates of the Caribbean” is very historically accurate when it comes to the general fact …show more content…
that Captain Jack Sparrow was based off many famous pirates. “Pirates of the Caribbean” is very accurate in its depiction of weaponry. Flintlock pistols were used throughout the films and they did exist as of 17th century weapons. Round shots, bar shots and chain shot were used as ammunition for cannons. Each had a different purpose as shown in the series. Round shot were a normal ball used to only damage the ship. Chain and bar shots were used for ripping sails. A cutlass, short broadsword, was used for chopping. Flags were also used throughout the film. Pirates used threatening flags to win battles before they even started. Ammunition would not be used and men would not be killed if a flag was threatening enough. Some ships either saw the flag and made a run or dropped sails and surrendered. The grenadoe, which is found in the film, is a bomb that is similar to a grenade. Once the fuse is lit the gunpowder is ignited. Overall the film was extremely accurate in its display of weapons. The pirate code is a set of guidelines, set by a crew’s captain, to create the crew’s way of behaving. The film has its own pirate code that resembles the historical code easily. Captain Jack Sparrow’s code states that if the crewmembers maroon another pirate, he will be sent away with a bottle of rum, and a gun with a single bullet. Captain John Phillips mentions that if a crewmember is marooned, he will be left with a bottle of water, gunpowder, and a gun with a single bullet. Jack Sparrow also describes his code to include that if someone sees a ship to attack, he would receive the best pistol onboard that ship. That is historically accurate because Edward Lowe, another pirate of the 1600s, instructs if a pirate spies a ship to attack first, he will gain the most powerful pistol. Besides these similarities, the film also created some historically inaccurate propositions. According to the film, the Pirate Code describes, “Any man who falls behind injured will be left behind.” As stated in Bart Roberts’ code, the pirate will be awarded with $800, unlike the film’s code. Overall, the film’s directors made a good representation reconstructing a historical pirate code. There are many sea myths that are shown in the series of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” One of the myths is the Flying Dutchman, which is portrayed as the Black Pearl in the series.
The Flying Dutchman is a myth about a ship that was damned to sail the seas with an undead crew forever because of a horrible crime taken place on the ship. The captain of the ship in the movie is Captain Barbosa who is a ruthless pirate thirsty for gold and to lift the curse. Another sea myth that is in the series is the myth of the Kraken. This is a Scandinavian myth of a squid looking creature that destroys ships and starts large whirlpools. In the series the kraken is a huge squid like animal that attacks the ships and destroys it. Another sea myth is Calypso a very pale skinned lady with blonde hair. She is a lady that controls men to do whatever she wants by making them fall in love with her. She is known to be the daughter of the Titan Atlas. In the movie she is a black woman with a Jamaican accent. She is on board Jack Sparrow’s ship and she steers the ship. She cursed Davy Jones forever because he stopped sending her souls. Based on this research it says that “Pirates of the Caribbean” is mostly accurate based on real
myths. Although the “Pirates of the Caribbean” has some historical deficiencies its general content is very accurate and it portrays similar lives of the pirates that lived during the 17th century. Jack Sparrow dressed like real pirates and had some similar physical attributes for example, dreadlocks. The weaponry used in the film was almost replicated from the weapons used by true sailors of the Caribbean. There were a few slight differences between the code of Captain Sparrow and the codes of true pirates. Captain Sparrow portrayed some rather kinder codes compared to Edward Teech or Edward Lowe but, he gave the same shares of loot as the real pirates. Sea myths, although they had a few misunderstandings, were pretty accurate. Overall the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie shows how life was like for a pirate and what actually happened in the Caribbean Sea in the 1700’s.

The word "privateer" conjures a romantic image in the minds of most Americans. Tales of battle and bounty pervade the folklore of privateering, which has become a cherished, if often overlooked part of our shared heritage. Legends were forged during the battle for American independence, and these men were understandably glorified as part of the formation of our national identity. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of these men were common opportunists, if noteworthy naval warriors. The profit motive was the driving force behind almost all of their expeditions, and a successful privateer could easily become quite wealthy. In times of peace, these men would be common pirates, pariahs of the maritime community. Commissioned in times of war, they were respected entrepreneurs, serving their purses and their country, if only incidentally the latter. However vulgar their motivation, the system of privateering arose because it provided a valuable service to thecountry, and indeed the American Revolution might not have been won without their involvement. Many scholars agree that all war begins for economic reasons, and the privateers of the war for independence contributed by attacking the commercial livelihood of Great Britain's merchants.
As part of the tease on the fifth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Johnny Depp appeared onstage dressed as Jack Sparrow together with Sean Bailey, president of production of Walt Disney Pictures.
Jack is described as tall, thin, and bony, and his hair was red beneath the black cap, his face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Although, For Jack, the island is like the best summer vacation ever. His ship that is most commonly known was called Queen Anne’s Revenge (“Blackbeard: Pirate Terror at Sea”). They captured this ship in 1716 and sailed it for two years (“Pirate Shipwrecks”). For the two years they ...
Many films are based on historical events or information. However, the movies typically romanticize the history that they are inspired by. In Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides there are some elements of historical piracy, such as the use of privateers, women disguising as male pirates, and class on board ships. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a Hollywood film that is inspired by historical accounts which also uses drama and romanticism to appeal to the general public.
The Golden Age of Piracy began around 1650, and ended around 1730. Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence at sea, but can include acts committed on land, in the air, or in other major bodies of water or on a shore. It does not normally include crimes committed against persons traveling on the same vessel as the criminal. The term has been used throughout history to refer to raids across land borders by non-state agents. A pirate is one who commits robberies at sea, usually without being allotted to do so by any particular nation. The usual crime for piracy can include being hung, or publically executed. Some of the most famous pirates who were killed either because of piracy, or because of natural causes, are Barbarossa, Stede Bonnet, Anne Bonney, Sir Francis Drake, Captain Greaves, William Kidd, Jean Laffite, Sir Henry Morgan, Mary Read, and Giovanni da Verrazano.
Long John Silver is one of the best characters in Treasure Island. He is everything anyone would imagine a pirate would be; he is sly, cunning, and peg-legged with a parot on his shoulder. Long John Silver sets the trademark cliche of the classic pirateband tuat is why a lot of other popular pirates are based on his characteristics. Long John Silver is a lot like an older and wiser version of Jim Hawkins, they share a lot of the same qualities. They are both brave, well-spoken, very practical and both are quick to change sides if need be. The only difference is that Long John Silver is a pirate, or "gentleman of fortune" as he likes to be called. Also, there are many examples of Long John Silver's very persuasive manner. He tricks Squire Trelawny into believing him over th captain. The fact that Squire Trelawny believes in duty and class shows how persuasive Long John Silver is. It is also very interesting to see him convince young Dick Johnson to join the pirates while they were on the Hispaniola.. So, one thing that...
Most pirates were originally seamen that severed for the British naval ships. When many of those men lost their jobs they turned to piracy to make a living (“Life Aboard Ship
He walks slowly, taking a long time to get from point A to point B. He moves slowly, except when using his hands to cut clothes, bushes, or hair. However, the slowness displays multiple traits within the character: his curiosity, his meticulousness, his apprehension (again), his hesitation, his naivety, and his fear. Though one might not at first think it, Jack Sparrow also moves with directness, and with much more purpose than Edward Scissorhands.
I loved the movie the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It is the first movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. It is amazing because of the catchy music, the suspense in the action, and the overall storyline of the movie. The movie is about a pirate named Jack Sparrow who used to be the captain of the ship called “Black Pearl.” It is known as the fastest ship that sails the seas. Jack Sparrow’s mission is to find the ship and become captain again but little did he know he would not be on the adventure by himself after he landed in Port Royal. Port Royal is a British island where a girl named Elizabeth Swan, and a boy named Will Turner live. Elizabeth get’s taken by the crew of the Black Pearl after she dropped a rare medallion into the water which summoned the ship. Elizabeth’s disappearance made Jack and Will join each other to try to find Elizabeth.
As most may only know from what they have seen in movies, pirates ran rather free in the late 1600s. Piracy was an easy means to accumulate wealth by stealing from merchant trading vessels. With the lack of technology during this time, there was no way of monitoring and controlling the free seas. Jack Sparrow, (made famous form the Pirates of the Caribbean series) is a fine example of a free roaming pirate. Jack can and wants to be considered by his company as an elite pirate due to the fact that he is a captain. Through the use of referencing to scenes from The Pirates of the Caribbean movies, this paper will strive to diagnosis jack sparrow of his possible disorders, and attempt to teach him some different treatment options that may help him cope with or eliminate his symptoms in an attempt to ride him to ride him of his disorder entirely.
Bob Marley was born, Robert Nesta Marley on February 6, 1945 in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. He was a Jamaican singer, songwriter and musician who became an international icon, blending mostly reggae, ska and rocksteady in his compositions. In 1963 Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Junior Braithwaite, Beverly Kelso and Cherry Smith formed a band called The Teenagers, after several name changes they stuck with “The Wailers”. Their single “Simmer Down” for the Coxsone label became a Jamaican #1 in February 1964, selling an estimated 70,000 copies. The Wailers were now regularly recording for Studio One and found themselves working with other well-established Jamaican musicians.
The pirate code as it is called in the movie could be considered an analogy to U.S. Constitution for being rules that it’s citizens follow that make up the very being of what makes an American an American or what makes a pirate, a pirate. Becoming a pirate was basically the original American Dream, the idea of coming to America to free oneself and be given a chance to make a name for themselves as well, this is the same for pirates leaving British control and being able to live freely and claim fame for themselves. This is shown in the movie when they go to Tortuga and the town is in anarchy, yet everyone is happy to be free and even though it doesn’t look like it the town is still thriving. Pirates are just men who are looking for a better life beyond what they are living now without the constraints that the government put on them while they were citizens. Americans are the same way and that was how the United States came to be formed because the US didn’t not accept the control that Britain had, so they fought back to free themselves and develop a new country. The diversity of America could also be seen in the Captain Jack Sparrow’s crew, which included African-Americans, women, midgets, and a parrot. This also goes for any of the pirate crew presented in the movie, while the British soldiers are all Caucasian and almost all the citizens
