Learning all these different tooth brushing methods really opened up my eyes. I had no idea I had been brushing my teeth the wrong way this whole time. I cannot believe I actually remember so vividly the time when I was being taught how to brush my teeth, because it feels like it was ages ago. Being taught how to brush my teeth was a very fun experience. I think that is the reason why I remember it so vividly. I was about 6 years old, and at the beginning I did not like brushing my teeth at all. I used to give my mother such a hard time when she tried to brush my teeth, and cry all the time. I used to live in Dominican Republic, and back then there was a very famous cartoon commercial from colgate called “Dr Muelitas and the tooth defenders”. …show more content…
She saw my facial expression and said: “This is what will happen to you if you don’t brush your teeth.” I think after that, my desire to brush my teeth was even higher. It is so surprising the way things change. I have a 6 year old sister, and I decided to teach her how to brush her teeth. She hated brushing her teeth, which I think is a phase we all go through when we are little. Now, she loves doing it, because she loves the taste of the toothpaste, and she has an electronic toothbrush that has a little Disney princess. At the beginning it was a little frustrating because she didn’t want to brush her teeth, but now as soon as she wakes up the first thing she asks is “Did you brush your teeth? Because I did it already.” For me that is very satisfying, I feel like she is all grown up and she looks up to me just like I looked up to my grandma. The foundation for healthy permanent teeth, are based on the first years of their life. My grandma made that foundation on me, by helping me make a habit of brushing my teeth twice a day. She also used to brush her dentures twice a day, and that also made me want to do it, because children usually imitate what they
Dental Hygienist: Have you been flossing? If not, the Dental Hygienist will know. A Dental Hygienist examines and makes sure that you have been flossing, brushing, and much more on your teeth. You really should make sure that you schedule cleanings every couple months or so. Your teeth are a big part of your health, and if you don’t take care of them, you will eventually end up with fake teeth, or the proper name would be Dentures.
Since I was a child my mom used to tell me “you needed to brush your teeth at least twice a day because if you don’t do so, you are going loose them forever, and guess what, once you lose them they won’t grow back again”. I am pretty sure that for some of you this words sound very familiar, right? As I grew up I started to wonder why my mom always tell me brushing and flossing is so important? And that is the main reason why I decided to become a dental hygienist, in order to be able to teach my patients its importance.
When I was shadowing a dental hygienist, she had a complicated case of cleaning which almost took about two hours because of smoking, not cleaning, flossing teeth properly every day. It was a challenge for her to take x-rays, clean the plaque, go over brushing and take notes on what the dentist said about in an hour but with proper education and training she did it even if it took her lunch hour. That inspired me and I am willing to do such thing for patients to help provide them better smile and reduce
There are many opportunities out there for hygienists to deliver the health care message to not only the individuals that cannot afford to go to the dental office, but also the individuals like older citizens and disabled individuals and to different schools around the nation. With that being said, it is not only just the hygienist job to provide that information. Other healthcare professionals are expected to come together and commonly agree on accurate information to specific individuals. “Healthcare professions, including dental hygienists, nurses and physicians should be communicating with each other and working collaboratively for common health care goals. This is the way that we should be practicing and also educating the future” (Pera). It is important to educate children now and get it in their heads that taking care of their teeth and gums and also their body in general is a good way to be successful not just now, but in the future as well. In order to do so, all health care professions are required to step up and come together to inform the young children in schools as well as the underprivileged people who lack the knowledge
Children are often sweet and adorable, but many times they may be eating too many sweets. According to the Channel Four News, it has been shown that the number one disease in children is the reoccurrence of caries, also known as cavities. Could it be too many sweets or could it be the lack of flossing and brushing teeth? For instance, many children go to bed or wake up without brushing their teeth and go throughout the day eating all sorts of food and candy. The result of eating and not brushing could lead to plaque build up and decaying of teeth. This leaves a child extremely unhappy and in excruciating pain. So who is going to fix this pain? Who is going to help prevent decay in millions of people’s mouths? Today, the world is lucky to have a well-studied field of dentistry.. Dentistry has much history, various specialties, advancements, and an irresistible salary.
Another preventive way to help children build stronger teeth is water fluoridation prevents 2/3rd of children from them not getting cavities. (Evans par. 6) Fluoridation benefits children and let alone fifty percent of the dental bills were cut in price. In conclusion, its recommended that patients brush two-three times a day two minutes long to insure that most of the bacteria is removed from the teeth, gums, and tongue also. Flossing after every meal should also be done regularly because of left foods that get stuck between the teeth. There are many kinds of toothpaste, but not all contain fluorine. That was when flossing became more advertised and Dr. Charles Bass made flossing an essential part of daily oral hygiene care. Dental floss has the ability to reach deep into the crevasses of your teeth and become more effective than your toothbrush. Every time I see it there, I tell myself that I am not leaving the bathroom until upon completion of the task. Duhigg says "dozens of studies show that willpower is the single most important keystone habit for individual success."
I decided to do my research report on dentistry because it is a perfect blend of science and art. It is a science in that you must fully comprehend on the different types of diagnostic and procedures you are doing. It is an art in that you are constantly working with your hands to create a beautiful smile. The impact you make on helping a person achieve an impeccable smile is not one to compare with materialistic things like money or cars. People often mistake dentist as only doing practices when in fact they could do more, like research. I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to interview Dr. Sarah Pham, DDS, a close family friend who practices dentistry in her own private office in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Pham was

Toothbrush manufacturers have poured millions of dollars and hours, to marry form and function in oral health care products that enable their users to brush frequently, comfortably, and above all, properly. Along the way, they have built the U.S. oral care market into a $2.9 billion industry, changed the brushing habits of millions and turned the lowly toothbrush into a trendy lifestyle accessory.
