Albinism
There are many difficulties associated with albinism. An albino is a human being with no pigmentation in their skin or eyes; they are born white. Albinos have factors that are affected by their condition. Not being able to stand out in the sun and get a tan like others, or enjoy the sun.Their eyes are also different. They squint and their eye muscles work differently. Many people with albinism suffer socially as well. People who look different from others are often ridiculed. Dr. David Wales reports “Visual problems are an important feature of albinism. Melanin is reduced or absent where it is normally present in the eye, skin, hair and brain and this causes maldevelopment of neural pathways related to vision”. Dr. Wales tells

how the signs of albinism tells by the conditions depending on the syndrome the person has. The popular trait that people know others have albinism is by the eyes. Just because i see that a person has albinism doesn't mean that they should be discriminated against. Albinos should not be discriminated by others. The physical appearance of albinos is often caused for discrimination. A person inherits 1 or more genes that causes them to not have the right amount of pigment in their skin. Wales went on to say “Genes carry the information that makes you an individual. We normally have two copies of these chromosomes and genes: one inherited from our father, the other inherited from our mother. Albinism is a "recessive trait" - a person without albinism can carry the albinism traits.” The person who suffers from this trait; they inherited this trait from their parents. Just because they look different doesn't mean they have the right to discriminate. With albinism there is no cure for this trait so it's not their fault and they can't change it. People with albinism can suffer from 2 different types of this trait. Oculocutaneous albinism affects the eyes, hair and skin, whereas only the eyes are affected in ocular albinism. One of the most serious side effects of albinism is difficulty with vision. This element of the condition is shown by irregular movement of the eye. “ Some of the visual problems associated with albinism arise from a poorly developed retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) due to the lack of melanin”( Wales). Amblyopia is the poor sight from 1 or both eyes and that's a conditions exactly like strabismus. Strabismus interferes with the binocular vision and that messes with both eyes and doesn't allow them to work both at once. Strabismus causes the eyes to squint, cross, or separate them (Wikipedia). When people see the grey or red eyes from an albino person they immediately judge. People with albinism has the same feeling as everyone else. Because albinos can’t be out in the sun they are restricted from doing activities like everyone else. The genetics of albinism is the change of pigmentation and melanin in brown skin. Albinos don't exactly have the advantage of being out in the sun, Albinos can't tan or enjoy the sunlight/heat because the sun on their skin burns it to fast and has lots of damage towards their skin. Albinos have a high incidence of skin cancer when out in the sun. Dr. Wales states ”Albinism is a genetic deficiency of melanin pigment production. Production is rarely totally absent but perhaps 1-10% of normal. It is usually inherited as an autosomal recessive condition but some forms are X-linked”. Just because they can't go outside doesn't mean people can be rude and judge them about that. Personalized attacks can be afflicted because the albinism trait Dr.
Elliot Davis reports “The impunity for killings and attacks against persons with albinism is a concern. While some investigation and prosecution seem to take place, sentencing appears to be rare. Victims face significant difficulties in bringing their cases to justice, fearing retaliatory attacks or further stigmatization. Without effective and affordable access to justice, persons with albinism cannot claim their rights and contest the human rights violations to which they are subjected. Albinism should not come to a point of killing. Albinism or not we are all human beings and equal. The albinism trait is a born type of thing not a purposeful thing. Dr. Davis reports “Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion”. (Human rights Dimension) Myths for albinism isn't fair and it's cruel. “In Zimbabwe, it is thought that having sex with a woman with albinism will cure a man of HIV. Many women with albinism in the area have been raped”.(Myths Albinism) People around the world making myths and believing them makes it hard and it's not fair. Having to states that having sex with a women with albinism can cure AIDS isn't what's right. Its taking advantage of an innocent women that has the same rights as everyone
else. Dr. Davis reports “The forms of discrimination faced by persons with albinism are interrelated. Their right to education, for instance, is affected by their vision impairment that can force them to drop out of school. A poor level of education, in turn, can lead to unemployment and affect their right to an adequate standard of living, consigning many to poverty”. Persons with albinism should have the equal rights and attention when it comes to school. Rather than the dropping out they should have the special help to make them more efficient and keep them going. There can be alterations in school for albinism to make it easier for the student. Not having the attention for an albino student and not helping them reach their needs to pay attention isn't right. Dr. Davis reports “The worst expression of discrimination against persons with albinism is their dehumanization, which lays the foundation for horrifying physical attacks against them. Because some believe that they are magical beings or ghosts, they mutilate or even kill them so their body parts can be used for witchcraft rituals. These attacks claim many lives and surviving victims and their families experience severe trauma. Persons with albinism deserve to have their rights to life and security protected, as well as the right not to be subjected to torture and ill-treatment. Education and awareness-raising campaigns can help combat superstition and stigma associated with albinism. Persons with albinism should not be afraid at all to be out in the crowed. They should have the same exact rights as everyone else. Albinism isn't a funny or proud thing to have. Giving them the opportunity for a life and change is the right thing and fair thing to do rather than not giving them the chance. Discriminating them because they have no pigmentation in their skin, hair,eyes doesn't mean they are different at all.
Dorothy Roberts is social justice advocate and law scholar who preaches the message that race-based medicine is bad medicine. She believes that doctors use race, instead of tests and observations, as a shortcut to give diagnoses. Her main argument is that there is only one race, the human race. In her Ted Talk, Roberts goes over statistics to explain why she thinks that race-based medicine is barbaric and shouldn’t be practiced.
Ethical violations committed on underprivileged populations first surfaced close to 50 years ago with the discovery of the Tuskegee project. The location, a small rural town in Arkansas, and the population, consisting of black males with syphilis, would become a startling example of research gone wrong. The participants of the study were denied the available treatment in order further the goal of the research, a clear violation of the Belmont Report principle of beneficence. This same problem faces researchers today who looking for an intervention in the vertical transmission of HIV in Africa, as there is an effective protocol in industrialized nations, yet they chose to use a placebo-contro...

Back in the early 1800’s, the color of one’s skin mattered amongst African Americans and Caucasian people. There was infidelity between the Caucasian slave owners and the African American slaves. Of course, the outcome of that produced a fairer toned child. In most cases the child could pass as white. The mixed toned kids got to be inside doing housework, while the dark Negroes worked in the fields, under extraneous work conditions,”their dark-toned peers toiled in the fields”(Maxwell). From the early 1800’s to modern day, there is controversy that light or bi-racial African Americans are better than dark colored African Americans. African Americans had to go through tests to see if they were able to receive priviledges that white people received,”light-skinned African Amerians receive special priviledges based off of their skin shade”(Maxwell). If an African American did not receive the priviledges similar to white people then they would try to change themselves to fit in,”African Americans are using bleaching creams so that they can make their skin lighter , just to achieve the standard beauty”(Brooke). As much as one will not one to discuss this topic, statistics shows how people are more lenient towards light and fair skin tones.Light oor fair coloredAmericans that poseess Caucasian features are prefiebly preffered.
Earlier in the semester we watched a video over Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome by Dr. Joy DeGruy. This video was inspiring for people to look at what has happened in our history and society. This has been a major social injustice to African-Americans for so long, and it is now time that it needs to be confronted. People are often confused about why some people get upset about the way African-Americans react to some things, it is because they never had the opportunity to heal from their pain in history. In the article “Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome,” it is talked about how racism is, “a serious illness that has been allowed to fester for 400 years without proper attention” (Leary, Hammond, and Davis, “Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome”). This is
The Tuskegee Syphilis Study revealed more about the nature of racism than it ever revealed about the nature of latent syphilis. In the words of Maya Angelou, “Prejudice is a
Colorism is described as discrimination based upon the tone of ones skin. Colorism is a global issue that affects an array of people around the world. Although colorism is a worldwide issue, it is unique to African Americans due to the experience of slavery and its long-term psychological effects. African American men and women both experience colorism but the psychological effects are more prominent in women. Women in the black community are greatly affected by colorism starting at a young age. This is due to the history of the European standard of beauty in North America which plays a big role in how it affects their self-image, self-esteem, social status and relationships, and opportunities;

Your skin pigment or the amount of melanin in you skin has the ability to change your whole outlook on life and determines if you will possibly have fewer or more challenges to face during your lifespan. The amount for melanin that an individual has according to society can determine if you are either the ugly duckling through societies eyes or if you are a beautiful swan. In this short paper I will be discussing the Dark Girls documentary.
The stigmatization and discrimination that goes hand and hand with a positive diagnosis of HIV/AIDS is overwhelming. FreeDictonary.com defines discrimination as the “treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit; partiality or prejudice.” In essence, discrimination is about actions and stigma relates to beliefs and attitudes. Both however are built up on negative views of a person just because they are apart of a specific group. All over the world, there are well-documented cases of people living with HIV that are being denied the right to health- care, work, education, and freedom of movement, among others. (UNAIDS 2005) This stigma and discrimination exist globally, although it appears differently...
... political or other opinion, birth or other status.” However people are still being discriminated against for their choice of sexual partner. In Stephen Fry’s Out there, Fry talks with the parents of a 14 year old Brazilian boy was abducted, tortured and killed because his abductors thought he was homosexual. I feel that even if a ‘gay gene’ is found it will not stop the discrimination, looking at Brazil where gay rights are legalised, there is still a lot of violence and hate crimes.
(Allen et al., 2000) The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a clinical situation that requires the ethical principle Justice to be implemented. AIDS can be transmitted by sexual activity, intravenous (IV) drug use, and passed from mother to child. Due to the judgments and fears from the general population and some healthcare professionals, patients who have this disease may find themselves suffering from discrimination in many ways of their lives. This discrimination comes from the stigma placed by the factors in which AIDS is mainly spread. These factors are poverty, homelessness, illiteracy, prostitution, human-trafficking, which create the labels like the “drug user” or “homosexual”.
