4 2 The origin of the concept of reproductive justice The term “reproductive justice” was introduced by a group of American women of colour, who attended the International Conference on Population and Development hosted by the United Nations in 1994. This conference, known as “the Cairo conference”, was the first instance of recognition of women’s reproductive rights as human rights where representatives of over 180 nations agreed on basic protections for women’s reproductive rights. Following this milestone event, various international assemblies, global feminism movements and transnational feminism movements advocated for the safeguard of women’s reproductive rights and the advancement of reproductive justice. Global feminism movements focus on the need for women of the world to work together to solve systemic issues which result from the effects of patriarchal structures and customs on women’s health and general wellbeing and their social, economic and political rights. Whereas transnational feminism movements focus on the intersectionality of oppression, the ways in which social status and social identity, combine to impact women’s experiences. The state has the obligation to create an enabling environment for girls and women to manage the practical needs raised by menstruation, by for example ensuring access to sanitary products in secondary schools. Structural environments in schools should be prioritised in policies which aim to address the problems associated with menstruation.
