In the media, women are depicted as “sex symbols”. There is a multitude of pressure on women through the media, TV, and ads to be sexually attractive. Many advertisements present “sexy” women. The unfortunate truth is that sex sells. Women sell. They must look and act a particular way fit the image of a “perfect woman”. The media commends a woman with long hair, a small waist, long legs, and an hourglass frame. Many women are not naturally equipped with this kind of figure and undergo a number of surgeries to meet society’s standards. Cultural depictions have proven to have an enormous impact on the way women view themselves and their bodies. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Sexuality shouldn’t be the determining factor of beauty. The media sends out an image that women constantly need adjustment or improvement. This can put into a woman’s head that she isn’t enough just as she is. I am interested in the representation of women and how they advocate for positive self-image. The effect culture has had on women’s self-esteem is oftentimes minimized.
I, a woman, have also felt personally victimized by society and the set standards of beauty. There have been times that I questioned my appearance and looked to the media for validation. I have picked myself apart. I wondered why I don’t look like the girls in the magazines and even started to compare myself to them.
