The denial of females’ capabilities in a male hegemony society remains evident in the world today and has inevitably influenced the perception of women. With the refutation of gender equality throughout history, the fight against a male dominant society is a constant battle that persistently tries to define a gender’s place. A woman’s role as a caretaker rather an individual who is capable to seek knowledge, of being an athlete, and all other characteristics that defies the traditional view and expectations of a woman. Sociologists have aided the understanding of how society plays a vital role in manipulating peoples’ thought of gender roles. According to Padma Prakash, society has raised people to believe throughout their life of one major perspective: the inferiority of women (19). This is because society has raised individuals into the perception of the differing ideologies of women and men’s roles and their status. While men are seen as leaders, tough, strong, and compatible athletes, women are raised to be deemed as fragile, small, weak, and incompatible athletes. These differing outlooks on gender have caused women in athletic roles to appear as a deviance in a sociological system. The sphere of domesticity essentially contributes to the difficulty of changing America’s perspective of women's capability as athletes. This is caused by the traditional mindset of women being seen as caretakers, wives, or daughters or simply one who embodies the characteristics of a mother (Hanson 15). These stereotypical roles have been enacted and passed to the future generations such that the custom has gradually become a norm in society today. Such norm inevitably causes individuals to question whether their desire to play sports or perform an act that defies traditions acknowledgment as an act of defiance.
