ANTHR 150 1 The remake of Roots (2016) has its physical setting Juffure Gambia, USA and the United Kingdom. It's temporary setting is from the 1770’s to early 18th century. The movie is in four consecutive sequence starting at 1770 in Juffure and ends in the USA early 18th century. The plot throughout the four parts is based on the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and the horrors of slavery in America and then later on in the UK up to the freedom and release of slaves. Which is a former of forced assimilation for when he refused the name he was given he was flogged until he accepted it. Compared to the slaves in Africa the ones in America in the movie showed that there could be different status or class ; That is a slave could be superior or in charge of other slaves. There were slaves shown in the movie who were put in charge of other slaves showing a sort of latent hierarchy since they do not do any physical intense labour as the others. Another example of hierarchy between slaves was the son of the slaves and her master (caucasian). He was also excused from intense labour or any at all at childhood and eventually he was involved in chicken fights and then later on became in charge of it and even had a chance to leave to Europe to compete. The movie therefore emphasized on the importance of mixed race in slaves hierarchy. The movie provided several instance of sexual abuse and physical abuse to the African slaves from the ship and even more frequent on the plantations. It was possible to purchase your freedom and be a free man but very difficult, there was only one person shown in the movie who purchased his freedom in
