In “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini, religion plays a dual role. Most of the hardships that befall the two protagonists, Mariam and Laila, are due to the many doctrines of Islam interpreted by men in their lives who use it for their own gratification. However, also provides comfort to the women. For example, as a child, Mariam used to study the Korah with her mother’s friend, Mullah Faizullah. Secondly, Laila is a young girl whose family background is not the best: her parents are always fighting and her brothers, whom she hardly remembers are at war with the Soviets. Despite the hard life that she is forced to live, she always seems to find solace in her lover, Tariq. Nonetheless, when the Taliban finally come into power, her parents soon become victim to the violent bombings of Kabul, and immediately, she is orphaned. I am a Religious Studies major; therefore, learning about religion is a genuine interest of mine. In addition, from my first anthropology class, Introduction to Anthropology 103, learning about different cultures and people who may or may not be different from myself became an interest. The use of story telling is important as the stories are often based on accounts of history or documents that have been found. Story telling can enhance the believers faith and are often integrated into rituals. The doctrinal and philosophical dimension of religion talks about the importance of the holy books/ doctrines. Since the doctrines typically have an account of the leaders life, and the leaders are usually educated, believers read the doctrines to gain an insight into the leaders life; and thus strive to become more like them or abide by their teachings.
