Imperfections in Love: Analysis of Hills Like White Elephants

Relationships have tended to be compared to the word perfect most of the time, but in Hills Like White Elephants, the word perfect is not the word to describe the couple’s relationship in the story. The story is written by Ernest Hemingway, who right before writing this short story was having relationship problems which involved divorce because of his affairs. It seems that he has a lot to say and can relate to this short story. The author seems to relate to the male in the story. This short shorty is based on a couple who are sitting in at a table at a train station waiting for a train to Madrid, Spain. The author talks about clues that gives us an idea that there is a lot of symbolism and feminism going on in the story. Also the author doesn’t really explain the reader what is going on but the reader has to figure it out. So at the beginning of the story the couple is sitting at a table waiting for a train, having some drinks. Alcohol plays a big role in the story which symbolizes a getaway or a tool used for courage to talk about something. They drink in large amount in the story because they think alcohol will help them talk about their situation. The couple seems to not touch the topic at first because it just seems awkward to talk about because the feel differently about it. The reaper can right away tell that their relationship is falling apart. For example, she says “I wanted to try this new drink. That’s all we do, isn’t it-look at things and try new drinks?” (pg.182). It seems like she is getting bored, she is uninterested, she not happy with the relationship or something has changed her mind about their relationship.
