Relationship Between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth Before and After the Death of King Duncan

In Act two scene two we see the killing of King Duncan by his 'noble

thane' Macbeth and his cunning wife Lady Macbeth. This is a crucial

scene. It begins with Lady Macbeth who has drugged Duncan's servants

and now, nervous and afraid, she awaits the completion of the murder

and the return of her husband. Macbeth enters and says, "Macbeth does

murder sleep, the innocent sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of

care." Macbeth has killed King Duncan in a state of sleep, in essence

he has killed Duncan when he was at his most innocent, a peace we can

all relate to, which makes his deeds even more ruthless and harder to

shoulder.

In the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth shows us that she is

supportive to Macbeth. Lady Macbeth regards her husband as, "too full

o'th' milk of human kindness." She is claiming that her husband is too

kind and a worthy gentleman but yet can be easily influenced. Lady

Macbeth takes this weak point and influences Macbeth to commit the

crime and gain power that Macbeth felt uneasy about at first. This

shows us that she is a woman with a strong and passionate character.

Macbeth on the other hand is a successful and valiant man at the

beginning of the play. Macbeth uses affectionate words to Lady Macbeth

at the beginning of the play, "My dearest love." This statement shows

us that Lady Macbeth and Macbeth admire one another, although this

does change as the play progresses.

From the death of King Duncan the relationship between Macbeth and

Lady Macbeth has changed to the extent it was the reason why they were

driven to death. Lady Macbeth was

the catalyst for Macbeth's plunge into murder and insanity, so in

comparing the relationship before and after the death of King Duncan,

the major factor that should be evaluated is Lady Macbeth's influence

over Macbeth and the key role she played in the death of Duncan.
