There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself.
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. Strategic planning is used to transform and revitalize organizations. The plan helps provide an inclusive understanding of opportunities and challenges both internally and externally for the organization. A well-developed strategic plan will offer a comprehensive approach and empowerment for the stakeholders involved. It is an opportunity for learning and understanding priorities that will drive the business to succeed. Jones (2010), describes how in health care organizations, strategic plans characteristically concentrate on operational and organizational goals such as when to obtain new technology, how to meet competitive challenges, and what staffing, tools, or facilities are needed to ensure organizational survival. The mission and value statements are significant in determining the quality of a strategic initiative. Leaders: Strategies for Taking Charge is an organizational management book written by Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus for those who aim to become better leaders. The authors emphasize that having executive positions or being a manager does not automatically make one a leader. For example, a restaurant manager may design a contest in his or her restaurant that can reward the highest seller a bonus. This type of leadership has many avenues to inspire employees by rewarding them. Equally, with rewards however, they can come with punishment. Leaders are able to have measurable result that can also have consequences.

Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266). The fact that many people don’t necessarily know the dangers of our environment through pollution is thrilling. Watching the films A civil Action, Tapped and Erin Brockovich raises attention to how our environment is being effected on many circumstances, with addition to companies not caring because how big the number is when they receive their income. On EPA.gov there are many issues regarding the plots in each of the three films. Including A Civil Action and the dumping of hazardous materials into water, Tapped and the impact water bottles have toward pollution and Erin Brockovich, where the pollution causing innocent people to become ill. Another idea to bring into perspective is the trail us humans leave behind as we move on. This can be seen in the film The Human Footprint and on World Wild Life’s website.
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
Interning at the Home of the Innocents has allowed me to learn the full circle. From forming goals, implementing activities, and looking at the progress made by each child. My schedule has not allowed me to participate in care plans, volunteer and new employee orientation. Along with completing a new admission assessment but they are things I would like to do. Before interning I didn’t realize what kinds of communication I would encounter, I have learned a lot communication practices interning at the “Home”. I have been able to develop specific skills such as communication and creativity that helps me throughout my internship and that could help me in other future job opportunities. Two courses that I feel made the biggest impact on me through this course were week 5 of PEDG 5372 Assessment Data to Guide Instructional Decisions and week 5 of PEDG 5373 Student Expectations and Motivations. Both of these courses were taken at the beginning of this journey to complete my Master’s program and both were taken in the summer before my second year teaching. I learned so much more from these courses than I did during my student teaching and my first year teaching combined. I feel that teachers are expected to hit the floor running and there is no true “training period” or period of transition, you just have to know what you know and learn as you go. These courses helped me to be more focused and knowledgeable about data and how to use it effectively and also about what motivates students and
