When I began this AP course, I thought that I knew quite a bit about writing. However, as it progressed, it soon became clear that I knew far less than what I had thought I did. This course has shown me how to take my personal skills, and adapt them to fit each type of writing. It has also taught me how to take my personal situations and form them into different styles of writing. For example, when we worked on our rhetorical analysis essays in class it was easier to learn the lesson simply because of how I was able to implement my ideas into the essay itself. I believe that working this way has it perks. One of those perks I obtained was Courage; I acquired this without it even being mentioned once in class. Some people may disagree but, I strongly believe that in my English III-AP course Courage was a big factor in pretty …show more content…
We would identify the parts or features of something and explain how these parts or features worked together. A lot of persuasive techniques were used in these literary works such as this quote in Arthur Miller’s The crucible,
I can. And there's your first marvel, that I can. You have made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs. Give them no tear! Tears pleasure them with it! (Arthur Miller, The crucible)
The character John Proctor states this with tears in his eyes and uses this type of emotional persuasion or Pathos to convince the rest of the inmates to resist giving their confessions to the court. Instead, he and the remaining prisoners decide to keep their social freedom by not giving in and confessing to the court. They end up making an important statement to the town of Salem, but at the cost of losing their lives. Being able to have an understanding in analyzing quotes like these, which ironically is courageous itself, is very
1. What is the difference between a. and a. In The Crucible, two characters that serve as foil for each other are Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail. Elizabeth Proctor is known as an honest woman, while Abigail is consistently seen as a dishonest person whose lies result in the widespread paranoia of the Salem witch trials. For instance, after she dances in the forest with other girls, she forbids them from telling the townsfolk about it and accuses other people of witchcraft, which leads to their deaths. Another example is the fact that she had an affair with John Proctor, Elizabeth’s husband, and tried to conceal it because she did not want her reputation to get ruined.
A crucible refers to a harsh test, and in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, each person is challenged in a severe test of his or her character or morals. Many more people fail than pass, but three notable characters stand out. Reverend John Hale, Elizabeth Proctor, and John Proctor all significantly change over the course of the play.
The Anti-hero in The Crucible A hero is defined as "someone admired for his bravery, great deeds or noble qualities". There are three categories to which all heroes can be classified into, one of which is the anti-hero genre. An anti-hero has the role of a hero thrust upon them.
ruinously impact a whole community, is very aptly titled. By definition, a “crucible” is “a severe test,” and the challenges faced by Miller’s characters are many. The historical events dramatized in the play reflect how core human values, including truth, justice and love, are tested under life and death conditions. The trials of the characters and the values they hold dearly come when their simple, ordered world ceases to be black and white and easily deciphered, and is turned upside down in the gray shades of ambiguity.
Context: This part of the text is included at the beginning of the drama, telling the audience about Salem and its people. The author explains how a theocracy would lead to a tragedy like the Salem witch-hunts. This is the initial setting and is based on the principle that some people should be included and some excluded from society, according to their religious beliefs and their actions. This is basically the idea that religious passion, taken to extremes, results in tragedy. Miller is saying that even today extremes end up bad- communism, like strict puritans, was restrictive and extreme. It only made people suffer.
Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a play that discusses many issues and spurs contemplation within the reader. While reading this play, because of the controversy of many issues detailed within, it is difficult for one not to take a look at one’s own morals and determine what one would do if placed in a similar situation. The key issues discussed within this play, the effects of hysteria, marital betrayal, and the murderous powers of lies, are portrayed intriguingly and effectively. The lessons that can be learned from The Crucible are still quite applicable today.
Authors often have underlying reasons for giving their stories certain themes or settings. Arthur Miller’s masterpiece, The Crucible, is a work of art inspired by actual events as a response to political and moral issues. Set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, The Crucible proves to have its roots in events of the 1950’s and 1960’s, such as the activities of the House Un-American Committee and the “Red Scare.” Though the play provides an accurate account of the Salem witch trials, its real achievement lies in the many important issues of Miller’s time that it dealswith.
Although a strict society composed of high morality and disciplinary laws may be necessary for safety, it causes internal conflicts within the individuals. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller a theocracy in Salem rules and guides the citizens into doing what is “right”, but eventually backfires due to issues of reputation and jealousy. Society has a lot of influence on the citizens, and with a bad reputation, it is nearly impossible to live in a Puritan society. Salem’s strict Puritanical social structure causes personal struggles for the individuals involved in the events of The Crucible, and then eventually these personal struggles affect the society overall.
Persecution has been a round for sometime and can be traced historically from the time of Jesus to the present time. Early Christians were persecuted for their faith in the hands of the Jews. Many Christians have been persecuted in history for their allegiance to Christ and forced to denounce Christ and others have been persecuted for failing to follow the laws of the land. The act of persecution is on the basis of religion, gender, race, differing beliefs and sex orientation. Persecution is a cruel and inhumane act that should not be supported since people are tortured to death. In the crucible, people were persecuted because of alleged witchcraft.
The Crucible is an incredibly influential play no only in the fact that it displays many important themes, but it also portrays how a theocracy impacts societal actions. The Salem witch trials were the culmination of the problems with theocracy. The actions of society, not only are impacted by their personal thoughts, but also in religious undertones affect them. Act two in the play portrays not only all of these themes, but also some important events leading towards the witchcraft hysteria. Act two in the play portrays how theocracy ultimately leads to chaos.
“The crucible” written by Arthur Miller, narrates that through the accusations spread in Salem, in times of immediate danger, it becomes human nature for individuals to resort to self preservation and push their responsibilities to others in a resort to save themselves. In result, in order to live, they resort to confessing false truths and assumptions. On the contrary, although is it human nature to resort to self preservation, there are individuals who use this opportunity to benefit themselves and others who tend to sacrifice themselves to uphold their own principles and morale beliefs. Portraying the contrasts between morale conflicts within the up holdings of human behavior,
Today’s society is extremely different from the society of the past. Today’s society is more in favor of physically visualizing something happen than actually reading and mentally visualizing. The movie, The Crucible, does a better job in portraying characters than Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible. The movie does a better job because it better helps visualize the whole ongoing conflict. This visualization allows for more emotion towards each individual character and also allows the movie to seem more dramatic than it actually is.
“A small upper bedroom in the home of Reverend Samuel Parris, Salem, Massachusetts, in the spring of the year 1692.” This is the first sentence in Arthur Miller’s book The Crucible. This book often is referred to as ‘powerfully disturbing’ because of the fictional part of Salem witch trials that took place in Massachusetts. This book is a fictional account of an event in Salem during the witch trials. The book starts out by introducing the characters as one of the characters Betty is lying unconscious in her bed. The first few pages of the book explain to us the surroundings of the scene that is about to take place. People begin to gather around Parris’ house where his daughter Betty is lying in the bed unconscious, unable to move and eat, etc. As people witness that Betty has been laying there for a few days, rumor starts to spread of witchcraft being involved. Abigail is Betty cousin, she knows what has happened with Betty because she was there with her and the other girls. She is deciding not to tell anyone, especially Parris when he asks because she is scared to get caught and put on trial or burned, etc. They have a long argument about it and as Abigail and the slave Tituba were listing of names of people

George Bernard Shaw, a writer and critic, once said, “We learn from history that we learn nothing from history.” In many cases, this is true. One famous work, The Crucible by Arthur Miller is specifically a good literary text that can help Americans of today. Firstly, literature is not limited to a certain time period.
