After attending the rape culture seminar it really got me thinking. First of all i learned about what rape culture is. Rape culture is essentially the objectification, and possession of a woman 's sexuality by society. It is why ignorant fools think that cat calling a woman is an appropriate way to approach someone. It is why victims of rape who go to the police report feeling like they have been raped again by the system. It taught me that an astounding 25% of college women are victims of attempted rape. That 5-10% are successfully raped, and only 5% actually report rape. It also seems like being a victim of rape makes a woman somewhat of a pariah. The foremost thing that comes to my mind with RJ is the family conferencing that they do in New Zealand for at risk youth. It 's been a slow process but i 've finally come to realize that RJ is about more than just about alternative punishments. Restorative Justice is about building relationships, repairing harm, and helping society. One thing that i truly have accomplished during Ms. Lester 's mentoring was the building of said relationships. I 've formed a bond with these students. Ive also provided some assistance that these students otherwise may not of had. The assistance i mean of course is the knowledge of college. The main goal of restorative justice is to return things to how they were before the incident, by providing assistance to these potentially discarded kids, i am hopefully returning them to a similar state to other, more privileged teens their …show more content…

The state gets to punish the juvenile for the crime they committed. They also get to incur the cost of their imprisonment, or supervision. The juvenile either suffers from incapacitation (the hall) or a slap on the hand (probation). Sure they could also be mandated something such as anger management, or Alcoholics anonymous if applicable, but that doesn 't mean they will get the help that they need. What does our current Justice system do for the victim? Pretty much nothing, in some cases they won 't even tell them when they get out, or the going ons of the case.
