An employee will always be successful if he or she learns from positive and negative experiences while working. It is inevitable that as humans we are bound to make mistakes at work but it is what an employee does about that mistake or what is learned and taken away from the mistake that matters the most to employers. Making choices that are considered successful in the eyes of management is a great feeling, and a good employee will learn from the success. During the time of training, my team was relying on me to guide them in the right direction. That included giving them the motivation to keep going until our mission was complete. Team leaders are ultimately accountable for regulating everything that happens within that team and held responsible for the outcomes (Steckler & Fondas, 1995). I was fortunate to have a team that listened and not only completed the task but accomplished it very well. Schoemaker, Krupp, and Howland wrote an article on leadership that outlined six leadership skills that a team leader leans on; anticipate, challenge, interpret, decide, align, and learn (2015, p.1). My management team was able to see these traits in me during that exercise, which was appreciated. When the time arouse again my company gave me another opportunity as team leader. Learning from success can be a great motivating factor to continue making good choices that better the company. On the other hand, failure has had more of an effect on long time learning over success. The reason is simple, repeating the same failure has never been an option for someone like me. I also found that learning from other employee’s mistakes is a vital tool in being able to stay away from the pit falls that someone has previously made. According to Amankwah-Amoah, “Learning from the failures of others is one of the most important sources of organizational learning to detect early signs of failure” (2011 p. 361). While working, I was able to learn from others mistakes, which made it easier to know what to stay away from. I have made simple mistakes, while on the job that was not considered to be bad enough for firing but required a warning. No one is perfect at their job and mistakes should be something that management expects from their employees. If management can expect that their employees are learning from mistakes made, then the company will continue to grow in the right
