4. The teacher candidate describes how his/her demeanor, actions, and reactions affect the classroom climate and individual students.
During the first lesson my teacher candidates and I received some feedback from our teacher telling us to “remember to smile because they are so happy to have you here.” This statement really affected me and made me reevaluate myself. I had been so focused on the lesson and making sure that they activities and presentations were perfect, that I almost forgot about how important it was to have positive interactions with the students. A lot of students benefit from structure, and we were able to do this in our lessons, especially the second. We learned from some mistakes in the first lesson and did things like display the groups on the smartboard, use the timer more, and have more positive attitudes. Our demeanor, actions, and reactions have proven to have an impact on the classroom environment and individual students. Students start to miss out on valuable time content because of behaviors of their peers. The classroom teacher noted that sometimes ignoring distracting behavior can be beneficial; the student will eventually stop after not receiving attention. In cases where the student’s behavior becomes disruptive to the rest of the group, I want to be able to find a way to get the student on task and complete some of their work.
