During the first lesson my teacher candidates and I received some feedback from our teacher telling us to “remember to smile because they are so happy to have you here.” This statement really affected me and made me reevaluate myself. I had been so focused on the lesson and making sure that they activities and presentations were perfect, that I almost forgot about how important it was to have positive interactions with the students. A lot of students benefit from structure, and we were able to do this in our lessons, especially the second. We learned from some mistakes in the first lesson and did things like display the groups on the smartboard, use the timer more, and have more positive attitudes. Our demeanor, actions, and reactions have proven to have an impact on the classroom environment and individual students. Students start to miss out on valuable time content because of behaviors of their peers. The classroom teacher noted that sometimes ignoring distracting behavior can be beneficial; the student will eventually stop after not receiving attention. In cases where the student’s behavior becomes disruptive to the rest of the group, I want to be able to find a way to get the student on task and complete some of their work. There are four general goals for student misbehavior, which include attention, power, revenge, and avoidance-of-failure. In the past, I have responded to all of these goals for misbehavior in the same or similar ways. I would give verbal warnings, and if that didn’t work I would raise my voice/yell, have the student sit in the hallway, send the student to the office, call home, and/or assign an after school detention. These consequences would usually temporarily stop a behavior, but they were not long-term solutions. I now know that there are very different strategies that should be used to deal with students who are misbehaving according to what their goal is.
John, a 15 year old male, is an 8th grade student attending a local middle school. John is a transfer student from another state and he been placed into an inclusion classroom because he has been identified as a student with a disability and requires an IEP. Lately, John has been verbally and physically disruptive during math class. Some of the disruptive behaviors John often exhibit in the classroom include making loud noises and jokes during instruction, calling his peers names, physically touching his peers, and grabbing group materials. John’s teacher collected data and learned that his verbal disruptive behavior occurs 4-8 times during each sixty minute class meeting, and his physical group disruptions occur 75% of the time he works with a group. After meeting with John’s other teachers, his math teacher learned that his disruptive behavior is only present during math class. According to John’s math test scores on his IEP, his math instructor also learned that math is a challenging subject for John and he is significantly below grade level. Both John’s math teacher and his IEP team reached an agreement that they would like to decrease the number of times John disrupts instruction and eventually eliminate the disruptive behavior. The replacement behavior for John is to remain focused and on task during math instruction and assigned activities without triggering any disruptions (i.e., distracting loud noises or jokes causing the class to go into a laughing uproar, physical contact with peers, name calling, or grabbing his peers’ materials). Students who frequently engage in off-task and inappropriate behavior disrupt the classroom and hinder learning for other students (Riley, et al, 2011). In order to reduce off-task behaviors exhibited by a particular student, it is crucial to determine the function of the behavior by conducting a functional behavioral assessment (FBA). Once the cause of the behavior is found, teachers can take steps to reduce the inappropriate behavior by implanting strategies to decrease their occurrence. This article examined the effectiveness of fixed-time delivery of teacher attention to increase on-task behavior of 2 students in a general education classroom. During the baseline phase, teacher attention was given in the normal manner and no changes were made.
I can guarantee that punishment is not the answer. Punishment is a suggestion made by reformers (Postman, 311), but it is the absolute worst decision that can be made in our schools. When students get out of school suspension (OSS), they treat it as a vacation day and most of them use it to play video games, and they still get to make up the work they missed. I feel that in order for students to prosper they must be comfortable with their learning environment. I plan to have an well-organized classroom with various bulletin boards highlighting current chapters of study, as well as announcements and assignments. I also believe that you must keep students both interested and involved to achieve successful learning. Desks in my classroom will be organized in one large “U” formation facing my desk in the front to create a feeling of unity and coherence. To further promote this goal I will assign a seating chart (possibly alphabetically) to aid in the diffusion of cliques and to avoid exclusion of these who may have the tendency to be isolated. The underperformance of many students at the primary level of the education system in Jamaica has caused the schools to be placed under the microscope and there has been an intense focus on academic performance of students and the success of primary schools in general. Tied to this underperformance are many problems that are hindering the teaching and learning process, but little focus is placed on the learning environment and therefore the school climate as a critical factor is faded in the background. School climate is the learning environment created through the interaction of human relationship, physical setting and psychological atmosphere, (Perkins, 2006). The National School Climate Center defines school climate as the "quality and character of school life" and identifies four major aspects: safety, teaching and learning, relationships, and environment (National School Climate Center, 2012). Any organization that serves people must foster an environment in which the workers, and the people it services, collectively feel a certain pride in belonging to that institution. In order to get maximum efficiency and productivity out of teachers and students, school morale must be at a significant level. Some of these facets include working conditions, safety and sense of belonging, and respected camaraderie amongst staff, students and parents.

After finishing the teaching part of the lesson, I realized that not everything goes according to plan. For example, in our lesson plan, we had the explain portion detailed and outlined to teach students the technical terms of what they were seeing in the stations and other activities and make it a collaborative effort within groups to work with the vocabulary words. However, the teaching of the plan was not well executed. Also, I learned that teaching a topic does not have to be boring or just full of worksheets. Fun, engaging lab stations and interactive activities can fulfill the standards and requirements just as well, if not better, than basic worksheets and PowerPoint lectures. Lastly, I realized that lesson planning and teaching require a great deal of effort and work, but it is all worth it when a light bulb goes off in a students’ head and they learn something new and are excited to be learning and extend their science
My goal as a teacher is to improve my student’s education and help them grow knowledgably. I like to see students at different levels develop with each other and learn. I want to challenge the students and watch them grow to their highest level of education. Therefore, having the students in groups is the best educational strategy I like to use a lot. I want my students to have freedom with whatever creativity they want, and to allow them to express themselves at any time. With this freedom students will be able to experiment with likes and dislikes and be able to figure their weaknesses and strengths. Education is for everyone and it’s a right by low for all; teachers, on the other hand, should do their jobs very honestly and effectively.
