The Oxford Dictionary defines Service and the action of helping or doing something for someone . The Christian meaning, as outlined in our Spiritual Disciplines Handbook, defines Service as “a way of offering resources, time, treasure, influence and expertise for the care protection, justice and nurture of others” with the desire “to reflect the helping, caring and sharing love of God in the world.” The primary difference therefore between the world’s perception of service and the Christian act of service is the manifestation and reflection of God’s love. From a young age I was introduced to the value of service and the equality of all. Although blessed to be growing up in a middle class family in Sri-Lanka, we were always taught to appreciate …show more content…
Of these individual experiences, the physical contact with the person(s), seeing the joy in their eyes and their reaction to feeling loved and wanted were the most rewarding. It confirmed to me that my service was a reflection of God’s love as that same love was reflected back on me, in their eyes. This was surpassed some years later when I had the privilege to work with Pastor Dayaratne at the Agape Childrens Villege; an orphanage he had started in the south of Sri-Lanka. The love of God was apparent throughout the orphanage, from the tremendous sacrifices made by Ps. Daya and family to the love shown by all the volunteers towards the orphaned children. It resulted in an upbeat dynamic, from amazingly well adjusted orphans with horrifying pasts, that I never expected to see, nor have since seen at an orphanage. The selfless work expended to turn the orphanage into a family environment, with the love of our Father reflected in the service of those children was incredible. The tangible presence of God’s hand at work was apparent throughout the orphanage and confirmed to me that service, for the glory of God, draws us ever closer to
I feel that the importance of service is to help a person in need because you could change someone's life, not because you feel that you need to. People who love what they are doing are the people who effect everything around them.Service has impacted my life because it makes me a better person. My family feels the impact, the community feels the impact, even servicing for a few hours a week affects the people around you. It makes the community a better place to live.
God’s gentle touch guided Mr. LeTourneau’s life, ranging from exacting correction to bountiful rewards, from a boy unreceptive to church into a faithful servant as a man. Kinship with his mother, brothers, and sisters, was relatively normal, without discord and tension. Common difference of opinions and conflicts with his father concerning work ethics and education culminated with R.G., as he would later be called, learning to serve is to love, defining a father’s affection. This life changing moment influenced him forever.
I equate service with helpfulness—assisting others. I help both my school community by answering questions and giving feedback and my community as a whole through my volunteer activities, the most enjoyable of which has been Habitat for Humanity.
I serve to Jesus every day by taking time out my day to help others. When my classmates or friends are struggling with something I try to assist them
After seeing though the eyes of my pastor I’ve come to realize the importance of faith and committing to one’s beliefs. Returning to church after two massive losses has helped my mother in many ways and it has also taught me as a young man how small things that I could do would turn to have a big impact on someone’s life the same way my pastor impacted my life and the life of my siblings.
At the beginning of the semester, I did not know what the "Service Learning and Social work Practice" course mean. However, through the process, with the accompaniment of Professor Preeti Charania, I understood the course and noticed a lot of transformation in me through the semester. The following are some of the changes and growth I have seen in me from class readings, discussions, group works, and working with the Church World Service (CWS) agency.
On the first evening of service, I was prepared, yet scared that I would say something wrong or the children there would not accept my ideas. When I arrived, the group was small, as promised since it was a Saturday and many of the hospital guests were out with their parents or home for a fun weekend of activities. The children and youth who were there, however, gathered 'round for some of the activities I had planned. First, I made it a point to learn everyone's name which meant that I p...
It was the summer of 2013 when I was living with my grandparents and they told me about volunteering at the church. I didn’t know what they were talking about, so I took the initiative to go find out for myself that following Sunday. I was in the balcony on Sunday, when I heard the announcements saying we can volunteer for their hope food pantry. I was excited because it was going to be a chance where I can help other and get community service hours. Volunteering I began to think positive thoughts and telling myself “ I am doing a good deed”.
This course has taught me a lot about the role human service workers have in communities and what communities need from human services. I learned about why this type of work is so important and was able to seen that importance first hand through my observation hours at the Dorothy Day Center.
The fundamental purpose of the requirement that an originating process (“OP”) be served by personal service, prior to the commencement of proceedings, is to promote procedural fairness and natural justice . This essay will examine personal service in the context of civil procedure and the governing procedural rules pertaining to the personal service of an OP in New South Wales , as outlined in the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules 2005 (NSW) ("UCPR"). To avoid doubt, unless the context indicates otherwise, “defendant” and “claim” shall include the singular and the plural as an OP may comprise of multiple defendants and/or multiple claims.
He simply looked at me and said that he loved serving the kids because they are the unfortunate ones. I have learned what it means to serve and what it means to be content and trust God. I have learned what it means to be grateful, even through the hard times. My relationship with God has really improved since my experience in Tecate, and I will be forever grateful for that door that God opened in my life. Over the trip, I had the pleasure of living among and working with the men and women of the orphanage.
If we open our lives and give service to those less fortunate than ourselves, we allow our hearts to receive immeasurable happiness. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it is a great or small need, we become a part of their life and can help alleviate heavy burdens. Making time to help people in need creates opportunities for us to develop new and lasting relationships. Serving our fellowmen allows the best in each of us to shine through and we can become examples to our children.
In order to fulfill the 12 hours of community service requirement for Nutrition course 139 I applied with five organizations on the approved list. The organization that replied me the fastest was Open Heart Kitchen, they mostly operate in Pleasanton and Livermore areas. Their application and signing up for shift process gives a feeling that this organization is massive, and many individuals really care about the less fortunate. From observation and conversations with the site supervisor, I believe this organization relies on individual donations, small business donations and large corporate donations such as Safeway and Walmart. This organization also relies on volunteers to work every day, they get workers from students fulfilling their hours and resume, individuals fulfilling court orders, and those that just want to help the less fortunate.
Without community service, people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibility or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to the community in which they live.
The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
