Before I had attended this module, my biggest aim was to understand how we communicate with each other and how we adapt our speech to fit the situation we are in. As I am combining Communication, Media and Culture with Film Studies, I wanted this module to help me build my confidence so that in the future, I can pitch my film ideas confidently. It was important for me to develop my communication skills as this would enable me to express myself clearly and concisely. One of the most important skills that I have gained is how to communicate with people by adapting my speech to the circumstances I am in. Personally, this has made me more confident whilst speaking to strangers and even with people I know. During the course of this module, I have learnt a lot about myself, in terms of how I communicated with the people around me. Before taking this module, I didn’t realise that I changed my speech depending on the situation that I was in. As English wasn’t their first language, I noticed that some students struggled to express themselves and put their ideas across. However, in order to tackle this issue, I would see what direction they were going in and would then suggest words to help them structure a sentence or if it was a complicated sentence, they would use a translator app. This loosely links to the cooperative principle because when English isn’t somebody’s first language and they make speech errors, I tend to ignore them and carry on the conversation. One of the reasons why I don’t mention that they have created an error is because the speaker may feel embarrassed about their mistake. This course has taught me many things. I was not aware that there was so much information to learn about communication, but I have been pleasantly surprised. This course has taught me better ways to communicate with my significant other, my family, my friends, my co-workers, as well as with strangers. I have greatly enjoyed each assignment because they challenged me to examine the flaws within my own communication style. I hope to employ the skills and tools I have learned in this course and apply them to all my future communications.
I am a qualified solicitor and in this role I have developed my communication skills. On one occasion I was representing a mother who was a victim of domestic violence. The father wanted to see his children but the mother was not allowing it due to the domestic violence. I acknowledged her concerns regarding the contact and explained that I understood why she would not want contact to take place. I also explained to the mother the courts view in terms of contact and domestic violence cases. I highlighted the fact that if she allowed contact without going to hearing she would still retain a level of control. I suggested that contact take place at a neutral location and be supervised by a friend or family member until she was comfortable with this arrangement. The client was reluctant but highlighted that the court would want some form of contact and she would have to adhere to this. This communication made me aware of the few things I need to improve when I’m having a conversation with anyone. I realised that my weakness is talking to strangers and I’m often nervous which makes me so unclear when I’m clear and I speak quite fast and get it over with, Therefore one those things that I need to improve is that I should speak clearly and learn to structure my sentence well, because I cannot have eye contact with someone I should always look at their forehead as it makes it look like I’m having eye contact with them. I should also be able not speak to fast especially when speaking to an Elderly person; I should also be able to be more specific.
There are thousands of scenes from movies and television shows that represent important communicative acts. In this particular case study, I will take two scenes of my choosing, one that shows miscommunication and one that shows successful communication, and explain what happens in them through the lens of human communication, using key terms and concepts that I’ve learned in class. The first scene I’ll examine is from the Nick Cassavetes-directed film John Q, and the scene is an example of successful communication.
This theory highlights beneath aspirations and consequences of the possible occurrence when two respondents change their styles of communication. Theorists under this theory contests that during communication, people adjust or accommodate their speaking style to one another. This is mostly done through convergence or divergence. People with stronger racial or ethnic groups highlight their identity through divergence. In case of social approval mostly by the powerless individuals, convergence is their most adopted communication mode. Adaptability, which is the way we change our behaviors to be appropriate for different interpersonal situations, has six factors: social experience, social composure, social confirmation, appropriate disclosure, articulation, and wit (Canary, Cody, & Manusov, 2008, p. 506). The purpose of this paper is not to teach you, or to show you how interpersonal communication is essential to everyday life at home or work. But, I am going to do my best to at least show you how essential communication skills are in all areas of life by using me as the example. My plan is to focus on some of the elements of interpersonal communication that we have been touching on this semester. While reading our Interpersonal Communications Book, three goals kept being highlighted that I personally wanted to accomplish by the end of course. I will start with the explanations and identities of my personal style within listening and responding & Emotional Intelligence as well as make some references to these communication dimensions. Also in the report would be provided an interview to my friends to meet information about my communication style from different perspective. When reading the opening lecture I cringed at the thought of dealing with communication. Sort of that belly ache feeling you get when you had to do an oral presentation in front of the class in elementary school. I understand have a number of strong qualities but self-image and my perception are still traits I long to improve.
I wasn 't quite sure what I was getting into when I first enrolled in Intercultural Communications. I had assumptions as to the goals of the course such as I would be learning about the way cultures interact with each other, learn about communication in general, or I would be learning about the ways we use communication through our culture. I think that I achieve the latter goal, but I also gained knowledge about more then just my culture. Now the communication class is almost over I have realize how important is to have good communication skills, and how it is key to life. I have learned many things in this class for example ways to approach strangers. Another thing that I have learned how to handle conflict and how sometimes it could be good it not always bad and many others. The way I look things have change to have reach my goals. This class was has also taught me how to look in the “other” perceptive, and not being selfish by just seeing one side. Irrespective of the environment in which one works, communication is always vital and a key factor of success. Communication happens both physically and verbally and is absolutely essential if you want to inform someone about something. ‘Loud shouting and even violence are symptoms of the ailment, not remedies.’ (Adair 2009: 3). Speaking is a natural ability given to most reluctant individuals. Since the beginning of time, it has been assumed that we have a right to speak and use words, thus we naturally begin our development of language during the early stages of live. After years of grasping and perfecting our vocabulary and language, it seems unnecessary to study the purpose of our development. Why, then, should we study “oral communication?” There are many purposes, benefits, and institutions that branch from oral communication. I feel that obtaining good speech skills can be vital to resolving workplace issues. Becoming more direct and getting straight to the point with my speech has impacted my experiences in increase my ability of not losing my listeners interest and avoiding improper articulations by speaking or communicating clearly and effectively to obtain a good impression of his or her listener because a person only gets one time to make a first impression. We must understand the power of the tongue. Changing our words can change our situations.
