How could you reduce homelessness in your country? Describe the steps you would take. Justify the process by providing appropriate evidence.

A decent home is fundamental to people’s well being and is not just a roof over someone’s head. Many people assume that homelessness is people without a home – someone who is ‘living rough’. Even though this is true, the reality is that many individuals and families who are homeless are living with family members or friends on a temporary basis. Others live in bed and breakfast hotels, hostels, night shelters and temporary accommodation provided from the government. 58% of homeless 16 and 17 year olds have either been suspended at school, have missed the majority of school terms and generally have had no support regarding family and personal issues. A huge number of homelessness teenagers are on the streets because of family breakdown, poor schooling and social behavior problems. Professional social workers need to be aware of teenagers who are experiencing family grievance problems in order to give support and guidence. Workshops in local schools and colleges would focus on, anger management, conflict-resolution, drug and alcohol abuse, positive relationships and homelessness awareness. Case studies around schools and colleges in the U.K on providing these workshops to teenagers resulted in half the students saying that they had improved in communication and anger management skills, and 10 out of 16 demonstrated that they had improved emotional awareness (depauluk.org) which will reduce the staggering rising numbers of homeless teenagers in the …show more content…

There are many reasons why people become homeless; cases range from people who choose that way of life to people who have no option, the latter being more common. Supporting teenagers and tackling personal and social problems at schools and colleges will definitely have a positive impact and give teenagers the support, advice and awareness that they need. Financial support and advice have proven to have had a massive positive impact, giving adults and families the chance to highlight, solve and take control of financial problems before the situation gets out of hand. So many cases in the UK have seen families being evicted from their houses because mortgages and bills cannot be paid. The most significant step that needs to be taken is the building of new homes across the country to accommodate the rising population figures. Free government housing should be given to adults, families and old age pensioners who fall into the category of low income and for those who cannot work due to disabilities or lack of jobs. However, strict rules must be implemented, because if these rules of low income, disability allowance and unemployment didn’t apply, there would be many cases of people taking advantage of the system and simply thinking they can be provided a free home.
