Solutions to Homelessness in Delaware Overview Homelessness is a social issue that has been overlooked for too long. It can be observed in many states worldwide. The rising population of homeless people affects those characterized as homeless, their families subjected to the lifestyle, and the communities where homelessness exists. There are many solutions but only a few will be discussed. Improving existing shelters and building new shelters are general solutions. More in depth solutions within the shelters include programs that assist the homeless with opportunities for re-entry into the community. I would first like to discuss reasons why this issue should be looked into and conclude with recommendations. Statement of problem People classified as homeless are described as citizens whom are unsheltered or without a home. When someone is sick or has fallen ill, health care and clinics are available but if that person does not have an address or said health care benefits their medical issues go untreated. Homeless people who do not have proper health support tend to have a continual declining health. Physical sickness is not the only hardship that the homeless go through alone. According to the Homeless Planning Council of Delaware (2015), “In order to meet the needs of the homeless population in Delaware and to implement these recommendations, the Council created the following plan. Overall, there is a need for an additional 2,003 beds throughout the State. A total of $43 million will be needed to meet the capital development costs, $17.5 million to meet the annual operating costs, and $5 million to meet the annual services costs. We realize that not all of these needs can be met in one fiscal year. However, we do hope that over the next 10 years we will be able to meet these goals to help over 6,000 Delawareans get off the street and into more permanent housing options.”
