Recommended: How women are portrayed in mass media
Pop stars today get a negative representation in the media because of the appearance that they put on. Most young celebrities turned drug addicts, teen moms or even alcoholics by the time they are 19. However, there is one star who only gets made fun of for her love life, Taylor Swift. She shows no mercy when it comes to her songs. She openly discusses her love life and breakups thorough the lyrics of her songs and has gained millions of fans from it. Taylor’s dramatic lyrics is what makes her who she is. Love is the focus of most songs in our era. Many artists sing about love because that is what most hormone-full teenagers relate to. Taylor’s song “Red” describes the love she has for a certain boy in a very detailed way. …show more content…
She begins the song with the line, “Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street.” This is used to compare her love to an expensive, deluxe sports car, showing that she once had it all. However, it turns out it was all a waste because it comes to a dead end. As the song goes on Taylor uses colors in her lyrics as a source of imagery. She says, “losing him was blue… missing him was dark grey… but loving him was red.” The color blue portrays the sadness and emptiness that she felt after her break-up with the mystery boyfriend whose name we aren’t told. The color red portrays the intense passion and warmth she felt while they were together. Taylor uses her lyrics to convey her feelings to her enormous audience of love drunk teenage girls. She has a strong and steady past of dating a guy, breaking up, and writing a song about him. To a lot of people this comes off as extremely annoying. Yet, teenage girls are in love with her music, because all of her songs are very relatable to the typical teenage girl life. Taylor has allowed girls to have an outlet when they are either in their first love or going through their first breakup. Every girl has been sitting in their room listening to Taylor, eating a whole box of pizza, and crying on their best friend’s shoulder at one point in their life. Taylor is so successful because she writes about her real life problems and refrains from only singing about partying like the average pop star. She doesn’t release a single video that doesn’t get millions of views. Taylor Swift is over course well-known in the media for her theatrical personality when handling her love life and her split-ups. She has without question no humiliation when talking about her former lovers. Her songs are at all times talking about her ex-boyfriend who crushed her heart into pieces or her new boyfriend who she could drop everything and get married to today. She doesn't have a care in the world about what other people think because it is her and who she is. She knows more than anyone that she can be a little over-dramatic at times, but it is just who she is. Besides, the media wasn’t making millions and selling out records by the time were just 18 years old so what does their opinion really matter anyways? Taylor Swift has always been known through the public’s eye for her love life; not for drugs or partying, she seems to keep away from that type of lifestyle.
However, the media always desires to find something wrong with a person, so the only thing left for Taylor is her relationships. Taylor does not care what the media thinks about her because her songs are for her and her fans. Her message to young girls is that she wants them to know boys are thoughtless, and that they will break your heart. She wants them to know that they may even go crazy after a breakup and that’s okay but it may be too much to go overboard. It's okay for her to do so because you know, she is Taylor Swift and …show more content…
all. If there was ever a better time to come out with her music video, it was the summer of 2014.
As we all have seen Taylor grow up she has gotten more famous, her track record for the amount of boyfriends has been definitely more than one would’ve anticipated. Her list of boyfriends grow because she has not really ever been in a steady relationship for over a year, but it would be hard dating someone way more successful than you… it would just be too much pressure. The media has constantly been picking on Swift for her boy crazy personality. Since her new album has come out, Swift FINALLY decided to take the opportunity on her new album to fight back against the media and their ideas about her. She plays up her boy crazy personality and mocks herself for her previous
actions. Taylor Swift also has many resources to help deliver her message to the media. For one, she is Taylor Swift, she is an international pop star who practically every person has heard of. Her fans are extremely supportive of her and the decisions that she chooses to make. Taylor not only has the means to get her message across to her immediate audience but her rhetorical audience as well. Her songs routinely become number one hits before they are even out for a week. Her videos are able to go viral through the use of the internet and her fame. Taylor’s fans love more or less every song of that she releases. In her videos, her fans allow her to perform the way she wants and give the media a message because they support what she does and who she is. Ultimately, Taylor knows that the media can’t phase her or the way her fans think of her. Taylor Swift remains one of the most well rounded pop stars today. Regardless of all the jokes and cuts made at her for her dramatic love songs, her songs have way deeper meaning than those of the typical pop star. She shows this well through “Red” and her use of vivid comparisons and imagery.
Taylor refers to herself when she was younger, along with a neighbor boy, as "dirty-kneed kids scrapping to beat hell and trying to land on our feet" (TBT 2). Her independence is also evident in the way she dressed. When teased that she dressed like an eye test for color blindness, she reveals she was actually flattered. "I had decided early on that if I couldn't dress elegant, I'd dress memorable" (TBT 6).
In the beginning of the story we see that Taylor is an average teenage girl living with a single mother. She says, “But I stayed in school. I was not the smartest or even particularly outstanding but I was there and staying out of trouble” (3). She was called “Missy” for a lot of her childhood but when she was three she said, “I stamped my foot and told my mother not to call me Marietta but Miss Marietta” (2). From Taylor’s childhood I find that she had a sense of personal pride and could defend herself. These really are great attributes and we really see these attributes grow more and mature throughout the story.
The issue that Swift is addressing is the fact that there are too many poor children in Dublin and that they are becoming such a huge burden for all the poor mothers or parents of the country. Swift then creates his own solution to the problem. He proposes that all poor children who are around one year of age, be cooked and eaten by the people of Dublin, preferably the poor. With this solution, he argues that it will eventually put an end to the overpopulation of the poor young children and it will satisfy the hunger for all the other people. Crazy right?
Trina’s intent was to create a song that liberated women from the double standards and stereotypical views placed upon them. Her song however can cause harm to young women that listen to take this song to heart. Instead of liberation, we are moved further down into the hole of degrading and devaluing women. Trina should’ve sent the message that these things were wrong. Instead she endorsed and encouraged them.
Taylor Swift’s debut album contained such songs as Our Song, Teardrops on my Guitar, and Picture to Burn. Swift’s approach is perhaps more country than the Dixie Chicks in a few regards. The banjo is featured throughout the record and more traditional country percussion, as well as more country-style lyrics. However, she stands out with a crystal-clear voice and excellent use of metaphor throughout her songwriting. In terms of musicality, Swift may not be the most gifted, aside from her voice. But in her songs, her personality shines through in a way that pulls light through into your ears, noted especially in her song Love
rap Her new songs have shown that she has no intention of being labeled and put in a certain
J. Cole talks about his insecurities such as his “crooked teeth” and expresses how nobody is perfect (22). Cole also says “I keep my twisted grill, just to show the kids it’s real” (9). Cole is now a famous artist who has the money to fix his crooked teeth but chooses to keep it the way it is to express that “We ain’t picture perfect but we worth the picture still” (10). Cole then transitions his lyrics that will target young women listeners. He expresses how some women are “Killing themselves to find a man that’ll kill for them” (17). Cole then encourages women to not “fix what God already put his paint brush on” (20). On the second verse of the song, Cole says “To all the women with the flaws, know it’s hard my darling” (28). This part of the song aims towards female listeners. Cole says “When I tell you that you’re beautiful you can’t be sure ‘cause he don’t seem to want you back and it’s got you asking” (30-31). This part of the lyrics explains how some women do not believe they are beautiful due to the fact that they cannot find a man. He later says “Take it from a man that loves what you got and baby girl you’re a star, don’t let ‘em tell you you’re not” (33-34). By saying this, he is promoting self-love and inner beauty amongst the generation. However, it did make me question why the lyrics and music video did not match. Although they do not technically match visually, the
Justin Bieber is suppose to be a role model for today’s society and demonstrates the immiturity of stars his age and how when you have “fans” all the fame can go straight to your head and you can start to believe you’re untouchable. “Why the f**k are you doing this? What the f**k did I do? Why did you stop me?” Bieber cussed out a cop when he was pulled over for drag racing in Miami. During the stop, Justin failed a sobriety test, admitted to under age drinking, smoking weed and taking some antidepressant prescription pills that his mother gave him. Over the last five years Justin has been careless with the stunts he has pulled and the things he has let take place. He has been caught fighting with paparazzi, he was urina...

The star text of a celebrity can help to decipher their image and transitions they may undergo. In order to better understand these transitions, one must know the definition of a star text. A star text is the sum of everything we affiliate with celebrities, which includes their body of work, promotion, publicity, and audience participation (Jackson, 08/09/16). One must note that “celebrity doesn 't happen because someone has extraordinary qualities – it is discursively constructed by the way in which the person is publicised and meanings about them circulate” (O 'Shaughnessy and Stadler 424). Destiny Hope Cyrus, “an American singer and actress, became a sensation in the television series
Society always wants to keep an eye on their favorite celebrities’ life. It is fundamental. Every little detail the public wants to follow like what and where they are eating, whom they will marry, or what they are doing all day –such a vicious cycle.
Ever since I was in eighth grade, I have been obsessed with Taylor Swift. She has been my role model since I was thirteen. When you look at most singers today, they have to be singing about drugs or alcohol, using vulgar language, or performing half-dressed. You never see Taylor Swift doing anything that she would be ashamed of later in life. On the other hand, she has had many relationships that have lasted short time periods. At least, she is not getting married for 72 days or even 24 hours such Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears. This is why I chose to write a research paper on her.
Whether the views about Taylor Swift are positive or negative, she still has been extremely successful. Not only has she made lots of money because of her hit singles, platinum records and sold out concert tours, but she has also found a unique way to connect with her fans. Taylor Swift is both praised and ridiculed because of her music and the way she perceives certain situations, but the way I see it, there are going to be positive and negative aspects of every form of media. What sets Taylor Swift apart from the rest though, it how handles herself with grace, hard work and determination and I think that is something that everyone should respect and admire.
