Are students Ready for the Real World? “An overwhelming number of students, 87 percent, want to eventually earn a college degree and land a career. But many believe that their schools aren’t helping them develop the skills they’ll need to succeed after graduation (edsource).” Students do not feel that high school or college is helping them succeed in life. There are changes that can be made to show students how to succeed after high school. High schools need to do more to prepare students for future careers by requiring more practical classes, teaching skills for future jobs and Careers, and helping students learn how to deal with “real-life” situations. Years ago apprenticeships were huge in the school systems. An Apprenticeship helps train and mentor students with hands on skills and expertise from a mature worker in the field the student wants to pursue (The Medium). Schools need to work with parents to help raise an educated generation. While teachers can’t control everything that happens in the students home life they can be there to help the student in need. For example not all families have parents that went to college, but if the student wants to go to college, it can be overwhelming trying to do it by themselves. High schools should be willing to help students fill out applications for college or help them understand how a job interview should go. While some high schools do have this, most students feel as if the teacher doesn't want to help them, or doesn't want to waste the teachers time. High Schools should be communicating with their teachers about giving time to these students to help them succeed in life, instead of just “throwing them in the world.” In Adora Svitak’s article, she states that, “If my peers were to be thrown into the real world, I don’t think that they would know how to handle themselves.” As a student in high school, I completely agree with her statement. Many students are scared of leaving high school because they feel like they are not prepared
