Paper Hearts Replace Real Ones

“Who shall live. Who shall die. Few of us will see ripe age and most shall not; Who by beating and who by gas chamber; Who by hunger and who by thirst; Who by exhaustion and who by gunshot; Who by exposure and who by dysentery; Who by suicide and who by typhus.”, Fania made her own version of the biblical means of death. She changed it to fit their situation and how they now lived (Wiviott 136). During the book Paper Hearts the Holocaust is taking place. Many hardships were faced; families split, and lives lost. It was a terrible time, and particularly for Jews. Jews faced inhumane treatment and discrimination on the daily. There was little hope, and few heroic acts. At the beginning of the book Zlatka is in the ghetto where she’s treated cruelly, and surrounded by barbed wire(Wiviott 1-3). Once they reach their concentration camp their heads were shaved and they were given the star of david to wear upon their shirts to mark them as Jews (Wiviott 83). Another time is when they were forced to stand outside and watch a lady be hanged for having a letter from a loved one (Wiviott 210). Something similar to that is when two lovers (Mala and Edek) tried to escape. They were caught and killed publicly. Mala cut her wrists so she could die on her own terms, and not the Nazis (Wiviott 221). All these things made Fania and Zlatka think the bad times would never end.
