The Rabbits by John Marsden and Shaun Tan is a simple but revealing picture book that satirically depicts the historical tragedy of the past aboriginals during the first and last settlement of the Europeans and ridiculing the Europeans behaviour using animal illustrations. The book is set in an indigenous point of view with the specific use of words and illustrations, as the story is told and viewed by the unexpected arrival of an unknown species called “The Rabbits.” This gives the readers an insight of what the story will be about and by using such illustrations that portrays the two as animals will position the readers into showing the emotions felt by the indigenous and the destructive prowess of the Europeans.

Sarah and Angelina Grimké’s radical disillusionment concerning racial inequality originated during the earliest years of their childhood. The Grimké sisters were born into a prominent slaveholding family in Charleston, South Carolina, and were raised on a wealthy plantation during the antebellum period. Their father, Judge John Faucheraud Grimké, was a respected lawyer, politician, and member of South Carolina’s exclusive plantation society. As an esteemed and affluent representative of this firmly established social system, John Grimké characteristically owned hundreds of slaves. Thus, the Grimké sisters personally witnessed the evils of slavery as an institution on a regular basis during their formative years. Although most children of
“Well, all the plays that I was trying to write were plays that would grab an audience by the throat and not release them, rather than presenting an emotion which you could observe and walk away from.” by Arthur Miller. All great works provide a way to reach in and grab the audience through the reoccurring themes like, greed, jealousy, reputation and hypocrisy. Arthur Miller had one of those great works and it was called “The Crucible”. The play was based off of the witch trials that happened in Salem in the year of 1962. Some of the characters were actual characters involved in the witch trials. Arthur Miller wrote this play during the time of the “Red Scare”. In Bucking the Sarge by Christopher Paul Curtis, Curtis writes: “Things aren't ever what they seem to be when you first look at them. What's important is that you keep your mind wide open and try to understand what's going on from a lot of different angles” . Throughout history, society has used appearances as an initial and quick means of judgment. However, reality shows that appearances can be untrustworthy because of their lack of being able to show the true depth of a person or situation. In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series, this idea of an initial, misleading first impression is shown and developed throughout many different characters and scenarios. Rowling takes characters who seem weak and makes them strong, turns characters who are seemingly evil into figures of heroic goodness, and creates situations that seem simple yet turn out to be inertly complex. The Harry Potter Series is skillfully filled with the exact concept that Curtis spoke of in his book. Rowling writes in such a way that the initial impressions of characters throughout are eventually challenged and refuted as the characters are developed more overtime. She expects her readers to recognize that outward appearances are deceptive and that it is important to look beyond those appearances and to learn to discern the reality of the heart which is not immediately obvious. This lesson is one seen and taught commonly throughout all different aspects of life and literature. For example, The Bible also greatly illustrates the importance of not judging people based off of their appearances as well as the idea th...
