The text, “Holinshed’s Chronicles” by Raphael Holinshed, was a source many authors and poets used as inspiration for their writing. Shakespeare was one of those writers and used Holinshed’s work as a primary source for his play known as “The tragedy of Macbeth”. The ways Shakespeare used “Holinshed’s Chronicles” as a basis for Act 1 of Macbeth is by using some of the similar plot details, the characters and setting. Additionally from the previous paragraph, Shakespeare used “Holinshed’s Chronicles” as a basis for Act 1 of Macbeth by using alike plot details. As shown in “Holinshed’s Chronicles”, “The words also of the three Weird Sisters would not out of his mind ...” (Lines 50-52). In addition, in “The tragedy of Macbeth” it states, “these Weïrd Sisters saluted me and referred me to the coming on of time with ‘Hail, king that shalt be” (1.5.7-8). This shows how Shakespeare used the same prophecies the woman offered Macbeth in Holinshed's Chronicles. On page 296, on “Holinshed’s Chronicles” it shows, “his wife lay sore upon him to attempt the thing, as she that was very ambitious’. Also, in ‘Macbeth” it shows, “Come, you spirits... Make thick my blood” (1.5.37-40). Shakespeare used “Holinshed’s Chronicles” as source material for the characters in his play and developed some of them to have a stronger/cruel character. Macbeth is wondering how he could become king of Scotland without him intervening as he is not in line for the throne. He believes that he will have to take action to gain this position. Macbeth was right to doubt fate, because his choices led to his ascension to the throne and, later in the play, to his downfall.
Macbeth’s actions support the theory of Thomas Hobbes by emphasizing Macbeth's drive to carry out evil for the sole goal of having the crown in his bloody hands.
They have many differences and some similarities. Holinshed's created his own story about Macbeth and inspired Shakespeare to make a play out of it. Shakespeare tweaked Holished's version and made a more entertaining story out of it.
In what is said to be one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies, Macbeth, there are many historical inaccuracies. Many experts in literature believe Shakespeare did this for a couple reasons. One reason is that the changes in history give the play a more dramatic purpose and more exciting story than what actually happened. Another reason could be to give Macbeth and more complicated characterization. Nevertheless, it is also a play about the political history surrounding that king. Shakespeare took the story of Macbeth from Raphael Holinshed’s Scottish Chronicle in 1570 and even more from the second edition, Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1587. Shakespeare uses imagery and repetition of events in his dialogue to make the story easy to understand. Overall, diction place an important role in every story whether it be describing a character, developing a plot, or understanding a theme.
Macbeth rejects conformation to traditional gender roles in its portrayal of Lady Macbeth’s relationship with her husband, her morals and their effect on her actions, and her hunger for power. Her regard for Macbeth is one of low respect and beratement, an uncommon and most likely socially unacceptable attitude for a wife to have towards her spouse at the time. She often ignores morality and acts for the benefit of her husband, and subsequently herself. She is also very power-hungry and lets nothing stand in the way of her success. Lady Macbeth was a character which challenged expectations of women and feminism when it was written in the seventeenth century.
