The Shakespearean Character Macbeth

William Shakespeare is the most performed and read playwright whose works captured the complete range of human emotions. He wrote various types of plays including comedies, romances, tragedies, and tragicomedies. Macbeth, is one of his most famous tragedies he wrote between 1599-1606. The dramatic alterations made by Shakespeare bear little resemblance to the facts, leading us to conclude to three main purposes. The first being the dramatic. The biggest change Shakespeare made to the play was the details of Macbeth’s death. In the play it is Macduff who murders Macbeth in Dunsinane. The truth is that Duncan’s son, Malcolm Canmore (later Malcolm III)is the one who defeated and killed Macbeth in Lumphanan with the help of the English army. However, Malcolm’s attempt for the crown was ruined, when the king followers placed Macbeth’s stepson, Lulach, on the throne. After ruling for only a few months, Macbeth’s stepson Lulach, was assassinated by Malcolm ultimately seizing the throne("Bio.com"). Even though Shakespeare used the Holinshed 's Chronicles as a source for Macbeth, to give it a more complex interpretation he had to move out of the Holinshed which gave no real account of Macbeth’s character or his motivation. Shakespeare changed every written historical facts for his play. Shakespeare 's thematic changes also enhance the play by combining two extremes within Macbeth himself: good and evil. Shakespeare’s writing of Macbeth captivated his audience and kept them on the edge of their seats. Macbeth is a classic tale of greed and corruption. The more power a person has the more corrupted they become. They had to have what they did and more, it was never enough. They would do whatever it took to get what they wanted even if it meant killing the King of Scotland, just so they could have it all. Corruption controls and destroys lives and will turn you into a person that others don’t want to be around. It changed the lives of the people of Scotland and corruption still changes lives today. When a person is in power too long and the decisions they make directly conflict with others they don’t feel responsible for their actions. The facts remain, whether you prefer the truth or the captivating fiction, both stories of Macbeth will be remembered for years to
