The evolution of cyber threats has reached a critical point where hackers withhold important information in exchange for payment. In the last three decades, the Internet has fundamentally changed the way people, governments, and private organizations store, use, and manage information. The age of the Internet of Things has left everyone at the risk of a ransomware attack (Richardson and North 13). Ransom refers to the payment that is made to free an individual or object that is captured (Ali 88). Ware refers to the status of being aware of something. Therefore, ransomware refers to holding something and making others aware you are holding it until ransom is paid (Ali 88). Experts are calling it cyber extortion and explain that it can be traced as far back as 1989 (Richardson and North 13). The malicious software can lock the data in a way that is not difficult for an expert to reverse (Ali 89). Nevertheless, there is a more advanced method that involves the use of cryptoviral extortion to encrypt data and demand a ransom to decrypt the data. In such case, it is difficult for experts to recover files without a decryption key (Ali 89). Ransomware attacks are normally executed using a Trojan or a file that is disguised as an email attachment that seems legitimate to the user. In the last five years, ransomware attackers were able to target multiple computers through the use of a botnet (Ali 88). A botnet enables cyber criminals to attack an entire system by compromising the network. The ability to kidnap multiple systems makes ransomware a significant cyber security threat. Modern piracy has touched nearly every corner of the globe and has increased with globalization. The tentacles of piracy now extend from South America to the South China Sea. The greatest numbers of piracy incidents occur along maritime commercial trade routes. Since China dominates the world’s container shipping industry, the South China Sea has become a hotspot for piracy (Kraska 2011). The prominence of cargo activity increases opportunity for pirates and indisputably triggered the sixty- nine incidents of piracy that were reported in 2009 in the South China Sea (Kraska 2011).
Ransom by definition: a sum of money demanded or paid for the release of a captive. With this, one can somewhat tell what ransomware is - a class of malware which restricts access to the computer system that it infects, and demands a ransom paid to the creator of the malware in order for the restriction to be removed. Standing strong as one of the most destructive and profitable malware till date for the perpetrators, it is reported “Since last couple of weeks we have been seeing 500+ incidents per day of this malware. The incidents are being reported from all over India.” says Mr. Katkar, CTO of India’s leading antivirus software Quick Heal, dated early September.
Computers are main technological features that allow criminals to step into unsuspecting victims lives. With a simple piggy-backing program hackers are able to track every keystroke made by the victim. One such program is called spyware, not to be confused with adware, which is often referred to interchangeably with spyware, but is potentially harmless (Louis 15). Spyware, hidden within downloaded software, implants itself deep within a computer’s hard drive, allowing it to track every move made by the user (Louis 16). Once inside a system, spyware can gather e-mail addresses, passwords, and credit card numbers.
The protection of trade in general has always been considered as essential to the defense of the commonwealth, and, upon that account, a necessary part of the duty of the executive power.
Society has become ever-increasingly dependent upon technology, more specifically, computers to conduct personal and business transactions and communications. Consequently, criminals have targeted these systems to conduct information and cyber warfare, which can include politically motivated attacks and to profit through ill-gotten means. In an article written by Koblentz and Mazanec (2013), cyber warfare is the act of disabling an enemy’s ability to use or obtain information, degrade its ability to make decisions, and to command its military forces. Additionally, information warfare is composed of cyber warfare and related to the protection, disruption, destruction, denial, or manipulation of information in order to gain a benefit through the technologies (Taddeo, 2012). Accordingly, as technology becomes readily available to various entities, the ability to conduct or perform warfare through technological means is multiplying.
A cyber-crime is an illegal activity that takes place on the computer or internet (Williams). Before the internet was invented criminals were stealing information from the computers committing data theft (VPN). The first major cyber-crime was in the 80s, criminals would send a lot of scams to the inbox of emails (VPN). Most of the scams included a desperate story hoping that someone would feel bad for them and send them money or they asked for bank card numbers in order to send them some money. Shortly after is when Congress passed a bill making it illegal (VPN). In the 90s the major cyber-crime was viruses (VPN). Viruses were sent through various websites and once opened the virus puts copies of itself into the computer without the owner knowing (Williams). Once the virus makes copies it slows the computer down, sends pop-ups to the computer screen, and can even shut the computer down (Williams). When social media became essential in the 2000s identity theft became a problem (VPN). People upload all of their information to their accounts giving all of the criminals’ easy access to all personal information (VPN). What is the “MALWARE”? A malware refers to software programs designed to damage or do other unwanted actions on a computer system. In Spanish, "mal" is a prefix that means "bad," making the term "bad ware" .Malware includes viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and spyware. Viruses, for example, can cause havoc on a computer's hard drive by deleting files or directory information. Spyware can gather data from a user's system without the user knowing it. This can include anything from the Web pages a user visits to personal information, such as credit card numbers.

Every day millions in some cases billions of dollars are made by businesses from income brought in by online sale of products and services. As businesses continually develop and expand their client base with online products and services so does the desire by criminals to exploit vulnerabilities in their e-commerce setup. The mass worldwide internet usage growth within the last 20 years has been “an approximate 16 million users in 1995 to an estimated 2,937 million in March of 2014” As the importance of e-commerce increases so does the need to protect the technological infrastructure that will carry out online transactions for each business regardless of its size. I will attempt to highlight and review the history of a few cyber crimes to show the progression of the crimes within the last 30-40 years. I also plan to review how the economy and consumers are impacted by cyber crimes. Finally I will make an effort to contribute with information gathering on how to lower the risk of a cyber attack from and individual user to a large scale business.
Malicious software, or simply malware, can be described as software that a computer user never authorized to be loaded. This means that the software can be found on user’s computer without his or her knowledge. Furthermore, a malware can be described as software that collects private information from any computer without user’s knowledge and authorization. As the name suggests, this software is malicious and can do great damage to a computer, mobile device, or other related devices. This damage can range from something as slight as altering the author’s name on a document to massive damage like making an entire device fail to function properly (Töyssy and Marko 109). The good news is that malwares can be controlled or prevented. As a matter of fact, it does not cost a fortune to keep a device safe from malware attacks. It also needs enough knowledge about them. In order to be able to do this, however, it is important to understand the various terminologies used to describe malicious software.
Every day, citizens are constantly losing money and being victimized due to these fraudulent activities. Cyber crime, including fraud, identity theft, stalking, and hacking, is a growing problem that can be prevented by taking the proper precautions. The biggest cases of cyber crimes are cases of fraud. Online fraud comes in many forms.
