The roar of voices has thankfully finally ceased. All that conflict and turmoil is now gone, and I am at peace. As the leaves blow in the slight breeze, all I feel is tranquility. It is not easy dealing with people who hold such contempt for each other, and that feel the need to instigate with such frequency. I see patterns cast by the obscured lowering sun are dancing about. They peak my interest and I watch them. They jump and dance with the shaking leaves’ rhythm, so carefree. This natural shelter is where I feel safe, beastie or no beastie. My body is limp and completely still; I contemplate many things during this brief period when I’m not listening to heated arguments of Ralph and Jack, and during this my eyes feel the need to close.
I close them and let my mind wander. Just when I feel utmost relaxed, the mixed shrieking of what appears to be Jack and some others demolishes the serenity. The sudden spike in noise causes me to sit straight up, breaking any peace I had felt. I didn’t understand their excitement in hunting. The disappointment sets in as I remember that I’ll have to go back and tolerate their pointless arguments. The excited yelling stops and I begin to relax again, still with the knowledge that I’ll have to return, but at least I have some time here. The little children aren’t so bad, or as they decided to label that “littluns”. Something about them was much more palatable and not as infuriating as the older children. I ponder this for a moment, but then I turn my attention back to the surrounding nature. The breeze begins to pick up as the sky grows darker. The growing cold doesn’t bother me, and I am still relaxed. The flowers near the ground have an angelic aura that entrances me. The darkness brings out the beauty of this place. I realize that it is time for me to rejoin the others, sadness lingers for a moment until it morphs into excitement to come back tomorrow.
It has been too long since I last wrote to you, so I thought I would inform you on momentous events that happened in my life in the last little while. The previous time I heard from you was when Gabriel turned three. I can’t believe he is about to become a teenager now. My goodness, time flies by so fast. I was so ecstatic when I saw your prior letter arrive in my mail.
Jack and Ralph’s differing identities that they firmly stick to creates a we-they mindset that deepens the conflict between them.
How Ralph and Jack Change William Golding wrote the story "Lord of the flies". It is about a large group of schoolboys whose plane has crashed. They get stranded on a desert island. The story is about their survival and how they run their everyday lives. The two main characters Jack and Ralph are both from upper class
Ralph’s attitude toward piggy is somewhat rude because of the way he laughs sarcastically to piggy's idea. For example when Ralph asks Piggy “are you going to swim” and piggly replies “no, i wasn't allowed to because of my asthma.” and Ralph says “well that sucks for you.” I myself thought that was really rude because it’s not his fault that Piggy has asthma. Also when he tend to call Piggy fat, which is all the time.
In the midst of World War 2, a group of English schoolboys find themselves stranded on a deserted island after their evacuation plane is shot down. With no adult survivors, the boys try to maintain civility by forming a government and electing a leader while they wait for rescue. Conflict immediately arises as Ralph, our protagonist is pitted against another boy named Jack in a fight for power.
My name is Piggy the first day I met Ralph I thought I was going to have a best friend. Come to find out he is the complete opposite of what I expected. The first thing he does is call me Piggy, a name that I got from being teased in school. Then I showed Ralph how to use the sea shell as a conch and he does not even say thank you. When Ralph finally got the hang of the conch he blew it so loud that all the birds flew into the air. Next thing we know tons and tons of children start to come out of the woods. Once we noticed that there were no more children coming, there needed to be order. Since I taught Ralph how to use the conch everyone thought he should be leader which he gladly accepted. After that we met a kid named Jack and his choir boy's. He was very mean to me and picked on me all the time. Jack and I might not become good friends but it looks like Ralph and him get along that's all that matters, that everyone can get along. I have to go now because some children are coming over I will try to write back as soon as I can bye.
Golding portrays the different characters and those ideologies that accompany them with a strong contrast in writing style. To further understand this we must compare characters from his Nobel Prize winning novel, The Lord of the Flies. A good example of this is Jack who represents evil, described at the beginning of chapter three, and Simon who represents good and spirituality, described at the end of chapter three.Golding writes the story with the knowledge that characters who strongly dominate the plot at any given time of the book will become associated with the mood and imagery of their surroundings. When he writes about Jack he creates dark images, to represent evil. One of the ways that he does this is by placing Jack in a dark and unpleasant jungle.
If I had a choice between Ralph or Jack I would choice Ralph. I believe that Ralph has better ideas and knows whats needed. He knows whats necessary if a person wants to get off the island. He had the idea of a fire to get attention but Jack thought it was better to go hunting. Hunting is needed but if theres an opportunity for rescue then I think a fire is more important. Also, he supports Piggy. I feel sorry for Piggy because the other boys pick on him. Jack is not a bad leader but I think he doesn't knows what the fundamental needs are. The only reason I would choose Jack as a leader would be because he is better at hunting. This island is dangerous with boars and the “beastie” so choosing a leader is important
With both hands resting lightly on the table to each side of his white foam cup, Otis stared into its deep abyss of emptiness with his head bowed as if willing it to fill again, giving him a reason to enjoy the shelter that the indoors provided. I could almost touch the conflict going on inside of him, a battle of wills as if he was negotiating with an imaginary devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. I sensed a cramp of discomfort seizing his insides, compelling him to flee, then a silent resolve, as if a moment of clarity had graced his consciousness.
If Ralph became the opposite gender, the novel would change as Jack would become chief of the group and lead the group on a path of self-destruction demonstrated by the usage of foil, imagery, and symbolism. The narrator’s foil between Ralph and Jack during their discussion of how Ralph was “chosen” (5.91) to be the leader, whereas Jack thinks “Why should choosing make any difference” (5.91) represents a clash between democratic governments and autocratic governments. Democratic governments are where leaders are elected by the people to represent them as opposed to autocratic governments where leaders take supreme control of the people. The differences in views create a dispute within the group and split them into Ralph’s faction conflicting Jack’s faction. The discrimination of women at the time was still
In addition, Hobbes believes that when there is no government or rules, men would ultimately turn into a state of savagery and deteriorate to battle against each other to satisfy one’s need. Faced with this ferocity, the only thing left to do is retaliate. “ Then there was that indefinable connection between himself and Jack; who therefore would never let him alone; never” (Golding, 184). Before Jack and Ralph’s rivalry, there was a sense of alliance. However, when Ralph became chief, Jack was neglected. As a result, Jack seeks to support his dominance over Ralph by showing that he is the better chief and hunter. Now, Ralph believes the only way to maintain his leadership is to fight fire with fire.
Sure, it’s not normal and I guess it’s not seen as common, but why does that have to matter anyway.
No longer does life’s daily anguish affect me as I move away from the bench and stroll along the gravel track of the park. I begin to forget my terrible grades in math or why my friends are fighting, it’s so easy to forget as I watch the sunset slowly sinking under the brown fences along with all the other troubles. It’s like I am being magically transported to a place for my head, surrounded by happiness as I circle the...
What would you do if you were to become chief of a society torn from a microcosm to a savage ridden island? This is the undertaking which Ralph, Protagonist of The Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, took the liberty to maintain the self conscious and values withheld within a civilized society. Ralph’s character is introduced early within the book characterized as a 12 year old boy washed upon an uncharted island (Pacific) which, vacant at first, features a fellow group of British boys, mainly younger than Ralph, which is a precursor to Ralph being elected as the leader of this tribe after their first meeting. The author portrays him as a valiant, rational, and understanding being who, provided the circumstances, is supportive of
It was the middle of autumn, the period right before the world would be concealed in a white blanket of snow. It was the time where the colorful leaves had released from their humble perch upon the trees and now lie sprinkled across the land. A chilly wind brushed through the area picking up the leaves from the pavement, I viewed in awe as they twisted and twirled in the air as if they were dancing. Autumn was undeniably one of the most beautiful seasons; even the naked trees were striking as they stood tall and proud extending out toward the heavens. I smiled tenderly as I turned and watched a group of high school students make their way up the winding road toward the MayHaven Prep Schools that stood at the edge of a hill. MayHaven was known to be one of the most prestigious of schools, people from all over the world tried to get into one of their great academies. There were a few adults that were scattered amongst the crowd, they either worked for the schools themselves or were heading toward the nearby town that was located right next to the schools. They walked vigorously, scarcely looking at those around them. Their eyes glued to what was right in front of them or at their phone to check the time, to make sure they weren’t running late. They didn’t stop to stare at the magnificence of the world around them, not even too peek at it, didn’t seem to care at all, they were all too captivated in their own world.
