In the modern world, radiology technologists are often described as "photographers of human anatomy." However, people regularly underestimate the importance of the men and women who work day in and day out to discover aliments, diagnose, and treat many diseases. Those men and women who studied and worked hard in order to gain the tittle “Radiology Technician” are the people who save our lives from behind closed doors and protective vests.

Employers typically require or prefer prospective technologists to be certified even if the state does not require it. Radiologic technologists spend their college time being educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care. Many radiologic technologists may also specialize in a particular area of medical imaging, such as mammography or computed tomography (CT scans). Preparation for this profession is offered in hospitals, colleges and universities, vocational-technical institutes and the U.S. Armed Forces. Many junior colleges offer the vocational route. Also, all registered technologists must meet the continuing education requirements of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals may also have these requirements based on their practice specialty or the state where they practice. The list of tasks is a very crucial one. According to “Explore Health Careers.org”, “For the images to be interpreted correctly by the radiologist, a radiologic technologist must perform the imaging examination properly.” This means that the radiology technician is in charge of a very important task. These people are the photographers of human anatomy. With their special knowledge, they are able to help the radiologists find injuries invisible to the naked eye. These people also adjust and maintain imaging equipment and must precisely follow orders from physicians on what areas of the body to image. Also, a very important step is to protect the patient by shielding exposed areas that do not need to be imaged. They often work with physicians to evaluate the images and to determine whether additional images need to be taken. Unlike many careers, a radiology technician is a very secure position.

As an ultrasound technician/sonographer I will have the ability to see dangerous defects within the human anatomy and begin a lifelong profession with many benefits. The Ultrasound was first invented in the early 1900’s and was surprisingly not used to produce photos of a fetus. In 1917 Paul Langen a marine life scientist used a form of ultrasound equipment in his attempt to detect submarines. After many failed attempts at using high frequency sound waves Dr. Ian Donald and his team in Glasgow, Scotland invented the first ultrasound machine in 1957. Dr. Donald even tested his machine on patients within a year of completing the invention, by the late 1950’s ultrasounds became routine in Glasgow hospitals.
In order to become an ultrasound technician you need to advance your schooling beyond high school. It really just depends on what you are willing to do. You can go to college anywhere from 1 to 4 years and beyond. 1-2 years would be your associates. Which is the bare minimum. 3-4 years would be your bachelors. Often times people with higher degree levels will also get paid a higher salary than those who are just working with the bare minimum. The more after graduate schooling you take the higher the rate of pay will be. Attending Florida Southwestern State College to become an x-ray tech is a huge accomplish for me. Because I have a learning disability unfortunately I have to take remedial courses like intermediate algebra, Brush up English, and a reading course the first semester. The good thing about studying Radiology is you can switch to any type of jobs in this field. For an example, you can switch to working with MRI’s or Cat Scans if you want to try another department in the Radiology field. This specific field is for you to work with x-rays. there are so many different modalities where it is important to use them and understand what is going on. With generic x-ray, there has been so many changes within the last ten years or so. The changes have consisted of starting with film screen, cassette readers to the present and most commonly used now, digital. Radiographers have to be knowledgeable about these changes along with many other things that play a role in this field such as, patient care, radiation safety, techniques, positioning, the procedure and the body habitus of the patient. Learning about these things are very crucial for the radiographers and the patients.
I am attending Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology to pursue an Associates degree through Northwestern State University to become a licensed radiologic technologist. I chose this profession because I thoroughly enjoy helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. A lot of people go to the hospitals really worried to get X-rays done, or a MRI for what they think might be broken, But not me. I always wondered what it would be like to run scans on people, do X-rays and things like that. I have always heard from my cousin that this field is something that has always interested her. I was under the assumption that Radiology was primarily X-ray. I couldn’t be more wrong! The RT 100 course, does an outstanding job helping students understand all that is involved within the department. Exploring modalities, equipment, expectations, and organizations, gave us, the students, plenty to contemplate. Material presented, gave me a firm foundation on what I will need to consider, assuming this will be the field of science I choose to pursue. These devices are lead lined and protect the technician or doctor that is taking the radiograph from radiation. These devices include gowns, gloves, thyroid shield, and lead glasses. For my first exposure I did a lateral abdomen and was really nervous, especially since you have to move swiftly when the patient isn't under sedation. My mentor was really helpful when teaching me the proper way to restrain the patient and helped me out when I was having trouble with the machine. After taking the radiograph we went over things I could have done to make the picture better. I feel that I could have collimated a little more towards the patient, but I believe I did really good for my first time. Some of the skills that I went over this week was giving oral medication to a dog, restraining for a dog's lateral saphenous, and collecting a fecal sample with a loop. Out of all of these skills I feel that giving oral medication to a dog was the most interesting. The reason this was interest was considering that the medication that was given could be absorbed through the skin. I had to wear gloves when measuring and giving the actual medication for safety
