Musicologists have dated the ‘birth’ of blues to be around 1890 as a West African tradition involving blue indigo in which mourners at ceremonies would wear blue dyed attires to resemble their suffering . Although, blues derived from times of slavery, the Prohibition Era (1920’s), World War Two (1939-1945), and during the Vietnam War (predominantly 1960’s to 1970’s), it has been a continuously evolved form of music in America, in which the similarities have always remained; melancholy and protest.

Says Janet, "I went through a great deal of pain from about sixteen to nineteen and a half… Pain that I really wouldn't wish upon anyone." During those years, challenging years for anyone, Janet released two albums, Janet Jackson (1982) and Dream Street (1984). She spent a difficult and lonely year away from her family in New York while appearing in "Fame," and by the time she was nineteen, had been through a divorce after a short-lived marriage to James DeBarge of another somewhat less famous singing family, the DeBarge Family.

In turn, she began to lash out at her family and the public, because she could not withhold the standard that everyone expected her to be. For this reason, she indulged in drugs, to release her from the drama and unhappiness in her life. Drugs does not solve the problem, it makes things even worse, because one is focused on numbing themselves from the pain, so that they can still manage their everyday lives. There is nothing wrong with having no inhibitions and just letting go of everything that consumes you. I believe that if Whitney could have established her identity at an early age and freed herself from the pressures of her family and media, that she would have still been alive and happy.
African-American music is a vibrant art form that describes the difficult lives of African American people. This can be proven by examining slave music, which shows its listeners how the slaves felt when they were working, and gives us insight into the problems of slavery; the blues, which expresses the significant connection with American history, discusses what the American spirit looks like and teaches a great deal from the stories it tells; and hip-hop, which started on the streets and includes topics such as misogyny, sex, and black-on-black violence to reveal the reactions to the circumstances faced by modern African Americans.

Still known as Stefani Germanotta at the time, she started playing solo and in bands at local bars and clubs, as found in Biography, a website sponsored by A&E Entertainment. This was before Gaga found an interest in avant-garde fashion, and her style of music and performance was surprisingly edge and rock-and-roll. Not long after dropping out of NYU, she caught the attention of a producer who slowly pushed her toward adopting a more pop style of music, and to escalate her look. She took his advice and started to change her style, and he was crucial in her signing to Def Jam records. Unfortunately, she had a falling out with said producer and was dropped by Def Jam records (“Lady Gaga”). At this time, according to Neil Strauss, an author for Rolling Stone, Gaga also suffered through a breakup with a long-time boyfriend. As an outcome, her music reverted to its edgy style. On the other hand, she started connecting with her audiences much more than before (“The Broken Heart and Violent. . .”). She had to start supporting herself then, and began both gogo dancing and working as a waitress, explains Biography. This same source indicates that she also started performing more frequently, and collaborated with many local rock bands. She experimented with fashion more than ever. This is quite a rough spot in Gaga’s journey, because she was moving away from success as well as
