Chapters 1-16
Connections Question- The author of Cold Sassy Tree, Olive Ann Burns stated that she made Aunt Loma an unsympathetic character. Do you think she has been successful so far? Support your answer with examples from the text.
Connections Answer- I believe that Olive Ann Burns has done a marvelous job that is very effective towards making Aunt Loma an unsympathetic character. Throught the first 16 chapters there have been numerous occasions where there are examples to support the claim of her being an unsympathetic character. One of the biggest examples i believe is when Grandpa Blakeslee was paying at the end of chapter 16. He explained about how he wanted to be good to his new wife and how he still missed Mrs. Mattie Lou dear, and

From your family has dealt with your grandpa getting remarried and how your family reacted to it, and also some of your things regarding Lightfoot McLendon. I am writing you today because I believe I have some advice to help you through some of these confusing things. I can give you advice about how to face some of these issues and just feel much better with life. Starting with your grandpa getting remarried. I think you should be somewhat happy for your grandpa. He may have acted a bit crazy and he did something totally unexpected and irrational but you have to remember his wife that he loved dearly just died. He might have felt like getting remarried was the only thing he could do because he didn’t want to be a burden to anyone. He was used to people taking care of him and he felt like getting married was the easiest thing to do. There is no reason as to why you should be completely on board with this, just keep in mind how your grandfather feels. Your mother and aunt probably aren't entirely happy considering their mother just died. I believe you should respond to their reactions by helping them see your grandpa's point of
When Aunt Alexandra first arrived at the Finch house, she took over as if she had been living there her whole life. When arriving home, Jem and Scout found her, “sitting in a rocking chair exactly as if she had sat there every day of her life.”(p. 168). From the very beginning, Aunt Alexandra felt she should be completely in charge. The first thing she said was, “‘Put my bag in the front bedroom, Calpurnia,’” (p. 169). Aunt Alexandra treated Calpurnia as if Calpurnia was her servant. Aunt Alexandra was a strong influence within the Finches home, from the beginning. It did not do much of anything in the end, yet Jem and Scout saw a different side of their father, Atticus. “Atticus suddenly grew serious. In his lawyer’s voice, without a shade of affection, he said: ‘Your aunt has asked me to try and impress upon [Jem] and Jean Louise that you are not from run-of-the-mill people, that you are the product of several generations’ gentle breeding−’”(p. 177). This may have been one of the first times that the children...
The dictionary defines unsympathetic as not showing, feeling, or expressing sympathy. Knowing the definition I believe the author has failed in making Aunt Loma unsympathetic. In my opinion Aunt Loma was more unhappy with her father's decision than unsympathetic. In the book “Cold Sassy Tree” the character Aunt Loma was just as sympathetic as everyone else in cold sassy when her, much loved, mother passed away. When Aunt Lomas father decided to remarry before her own mother was “cold in the grave” she was awfully upset! Not only did Aunt Loma dislike her father’s timing but she also disliked the women he was soon to marry. In my honest opinion Aunt Loma was only unhappy or mad throughout the book so far, so i believe the author failed to make
Loma is known to be bossy, jealous, and has a poor temper. She wants to be an actress or a writer, and she acts against her dead end marriage with her husband, Campbell Williams.
In the book, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, it follows a Olympian named Louie Zamperini, and his journey. Louie Zamperini was born in Olean, New York, his family later then moved to Torrance, California. Louie is: rebellious, resourceful, among many other things. Louie is who he is because of how he grew up, and the obstacles he overcame. Louie Zamperini shows rebellious and resourceful characteristic traits through his actions.
"Ask and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7). Grandpa Blakeslee formulates his interpretation of the bible, not specifically, but generally his outlook or overview of the philosophical tenets of the bible. Grandpa Blakeslee's interpretation promotes the idea that pleading God for relief or otherwise rather than for perseverance to overcome the circumstances one undergoes is not only a misunderstanding (of the purpose of prayer and how a christian lifestyle should be) but additionally an error in the usage (of prayer).
Men must face hardships. Men must face disease. Men must face each other [Parallel]. Men constantly pressure one another into perfection. Some men, however, crumble under the burden looming over their heads [FoS]. When some men cannot face themselves or those around them any longer, they choose a dangerous and deadly escape. They would rather commit suicide than face their hardships. In the japanese culture, society encouraged seppuku to end a life before a man brought dishonor to his family. In a world full of yearning for honor, young men learned that they must express courage through suicide to fulfill their honorable ancestors’ wishes. Gail Tsukiyama uses her novel The Samurai’s Garden to prove that only
There is no doubt that Miss. Strangeworth is not an easy person to deal with, let alone live with, and although her character is fictional, there are many people with the same personality. We can tell quite easily that she is a very meticulous woman, with a lot of perfectionist tendencies, a few of which are to nitpick people’s lives and make sure that even the most minute detail is up to her standards. I know of someone with these attributes and as difficult as they are to deal with, with their list of requirements to be met and their eagle-eye for detail in even the smallest things, they mean the best, and are always trying to help, despite the possible repercussions.
Aunt Burnie before was always perceived as the picture of virtuous she was kind, patient, optimistic, and passive, however, it seems her virtuous qualities affected others as well.. When Aunt Burnie was introduced, she walked in to Min and Jade arguing with each other while the children were crying she easily calmed down the situation and was described as by the narrator, “Aunt Burnie 's a peacemaker. She doesn 't like trouble.” This quote show how she was someone who kept peace around the house when things are amiss she was the one able to calm everyone down, so it seems that she as a positive role model to the family (Saunders 95). However, Aunt Burnie was passive, she acts apathetic towards her environment, and if something bad happened she would just go about her merry way. She even is uncaring to herself “Once
In the story “Peaches”, Reginald McKnight introduces his main characters, one being Marcus. Marcus is a good guy, but he is described in many different ways, due to his bad temper and immaturity level. Throughout the work, author Reginald McKnight takes great care to illustrate situations and describe feelings and personalities that many men experience. This way, even though Marcus is having trouble controlling himself around other people and arrogant at times, he still tries to be a better person for Rita and for himself. He does this by going out of the country to experience other cultures and enhance his morals. Although Marcus is strong and eager, he is actually an easily irascible, impatient, immature, manipulative, unstable man whose inexperience does not prepare him for the frequent mishaps in his life.
Mrs. Dubose, a morphine addict, was cruel to Jem and Scout. She often criticized the way Atticus raised them, telling them how much better their mother would have done. She would yell at them, saying cruel things about their family. Jem openly destroys her flowerbeds ; forgetting everything Atticus taught him about maturity and not letting what people ...
Again she just like her father is trying to be victimized even though Atticus is looking to help her in a
In many ways Cold Sassy Georgia relates to the small town of Silex, Missouri. Silex is a small town in Lincoln County, Missouri with a meager population of 187 people. The town likes to stick to tradition and gossip spreads fast throughout the small amount of people there. This is very much like Cold Sassy, Georgia. Of course there are many small differences between the two town like types of vehicles and types of clothing, but there are many similarities between the people of Silex and the people of Cold Sassy. Cold Sassy and Silex have many resemblances, and also many differences.
...morphine and makes it her goal to die without weakness. She does the right thing, even if it ends up taking her life. To Scout and Jem, Mrs. Dubose was horrible however her death made them realize that she was trying to get off morphine for her own good. She showed them that courage isn’t always apparent; you don’t always have to do something that stands out. You can be courageous, just by making small changes and fighting battles with yourself.
In the short story, The Shivering Tree, by John McLeod, past experiences are shown to have a profound effect on the development of an individual. Nanabush learns from his past mistakes which results in the growth of his maturity. In the story, Nanabush past experiences give him the ability to learn from his previous mistakes by turning his enemies into supporting allies, which assists him in resolving his conflict with the Juggler at the end. First, Nanabush act of making peace with Owl demonstrates his maturity, which puts in the right direction for success. Secondly, the growth of his maturity is displayed with Nanabush's final confrontation with the Juggler and permanently abandons him.
A further example of her disgust at spreading rumours is at a missionary meeting later in the novel. In the midst of a long critical conversation, Miss Maudie cuts in with “His food doesn’t stick going down, does it?” Her evident disapproval shows she is not expecting any opposition, as the ending “does it” is almost daring the ladies to argue with her. This makes it obvious that she is not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right, and is clearly not worried about other people’s opinion of her. She is similar to Atticus, as they both oppose prejudice and injustice, although Atticus does it a lot more publicly which is relevant to the era as women were then far more in the backgrou...
