Quitting Track: Personal Narrative

Pedal, pedal, pedal. the training room feels as dreary as ever. TV is playing the same old shows. The picture frames are in the same old place. I’m on the same old bike I’ve been on for the past three weeks. From the window of the training room, I see the rest of the track team. I try to fake a smile, but can’t help but feel like I am barely a part of the team anymore. Finally, I finish my bike workout and sluggishly go through the motions: Stretch, roll out, stretch again, and stretch some more. At this moment, I ponder the question I’ve been trying to avoid. Although Oprah Winfrey is an influential person, she unfortunately had a very difficult childhood. Oprah was constantly moving between places of poverty; however, she was mainly raised by her grandmother, who beat and abused her. She also experienced sexual abuse from other members of her family. She had a child when she was just 14 years old, but the baby died soon after. Even through this suffering, however, Oprah had a dream. She knew that she was destined to be a speaker ever since she started reciting Bible verses at just three years old. Oprah could have easily given up on her dream due to all of the adversity in her life. However, instead her dream fueled her to persevere through the hardship and become a successful figure. Dreams help us push through the toughest moments in life. Granted, dreams worsen our perspective on life by distracting us from the present. For example, a person may be so focused on achieving their dream that they lose sight of meaningful things in life, like spending time with family. However, dreams provide hope for the future. Beneatha’s dream has created a beacon of hope for the family because they might be able to move to a new house in the future and live a better life. The possibility of a dream coming true can help people be more optimistic about the future. In addition to providing hope, dreams also frame our life choices. One of my mom’s biggest dreams since she was young has been to travel the world. It was difficult for my mom to accomplish this dream when she was young because she grew up on a small farm with little money. Since she wasn’t able to travel much as a child, she made sure to travel more as she got older. In college, for example, she studied abroad in Europe, and visited many countries there. This dream has extended into my life as well; my family likes to travel as much as we can. My mom’s dream of traveling the world has impacted her life because she has based her life, as well as my family’s life, on traveling. Another example of how a dream changed the trajectory of someone’s life is from Steve Jobs. Dreams impact what we decide to do in our life and the choices that we make.
