Pedal, pedal, pedal. the training room feels as dreary as ever. TV is playing the same old shows. The picture frames are in the same old place. I’m on the same old bike I’ve been on for the past three weeks. From the window of the training room, I see the rest of the track team. I try to fake a smile, but can’t help but feel like I am barely a part of the team anymore. Finally, I finish my bike workout and sluggishly go through the motions: Stretch, roll out, stretch again, and stretch some more. At this moment, I ponder the question I’ve been trying to avoid. Should I just quit track and give up? Quitting track would mean giving up on my dream, a dream that I’ve been striving towards for years. Dreams improve our perspective on life because …show more content…
Although Oprah Winfrey is an influential person, she unfortunately had a very difficult childhood. Oprah was constantly moving between places of poverty; however, she was mainly raised by her grandmother, who beat and abused her. She also experienced sexual abuse from other members of her family. She had a child when she was just 14 years old, but the baby died soon after. Even through this suffering, however, Oprah had a dream. She knew that she was destined to be a speaker ever since she started reciting Bible verses at just three years old. Oprah could have easily given up on her dream due to all of the adversity in her life. However, instead her dream fueled her to persevere through the hardship and become a successful figure. Dreams help us push through the toughest moments in life. Granted, dreams worsen our perspective on life by distracting us from the present. For example, a person may be so focused on achieving their dream that they lose sight of meaningful things in life, like spending time with family. However, dreams provide hope for the future. In Raisin in the Sun, a family lives in a small, bleak and rundown apartment on the South Side of …show more content…
Beneatha’s dream has created a beacon of hope for the family because they might be able to move to a new house in the future and live a better life. The possibility of a dream coming true can help people be more optimistic about the future. In addition to providing hope, dreams also frame our life choices. One of my mom’s biggest dreams since she was young has been to travel the world. It was difficult for my mom to accomplish this dream when she was young because she grew up on a small farm with little money. Since she wasn’t able to travel much as a child, she made sure to travel more as she got older. In college, for example, she studied abroad in Europe, and visited many countries there. This dream has extended into my life as well; my family likes to travel as much as we can. My mom’s dream of traveling the world has impacted her life because she has based her life, as well as my family’s life, on traveling. Another example of how a dream changed the trajectory of someone’s life is from Steve Jobs. Dreams impact what we decide to do in our life and the choices that we make. Having dreams allows us to see life more
Dreams give the dreamers a sense of purpose. In a sense, these purposes created by dreams can give hope. One example is when Beneatha talks about wanting to be a doctor. Beneatha explains to Asagai that her dreams were ruined by Walter. She also tells Asagai that she had a purpose why she wanted to be a doctor. Instead that dream was ruined by Walter who lost the money to Willy Harris. Beneatha explains “No-I wanted to cure.It used to be so important to me. I wanted to cure. It used to matter”(Hansberry 133). Beneatha has a dream that is important to her, and it gave her a purpose. The dream made Beneatha happy and made her life fulfilled. She tries her hardest to achieve this dream. Also, she was passionate about what she wants to b...
The value of every dream is crucial to every member of the Younger family because of the effect it has them, but it is the family dream to own a house that hold them together. At the end of the story, Mama convinced Walter that buying the house was important for the family because the thought of living in the apartment for the rest of their lives was unbearable. Big Walter had to fight and was struggling to achieve his dream of buying a house, which ended up becoming the families dream. Walter’s dream interfered with Beneatha’s dream, and the families dream. This had a major impact on everyone’s life, especially after Walter lost the money. In the end, the Younger family was all happy about Walter’s decision. That is the Younger family American dream.
Lena’s persistence and Beneatha’s independence are extremely useful for them to achieve what they have been aiming to do in their lives. From both character’s successes and failures in their attempts, it is clear to see that anyone who wishes to achieve their dreams cannot expect for that to happen if they do not do anything in an effort to make it happen. Everyone must work towards their goals if they wish to accomplish them and learn to never give up despite any obstacles that come their way. In the end, it is not about the dream itself, but what can be done to ensure that dream becomes a
Everyone has dreams. Some people dream of great things, fame and fortune, supernatural abilities, world peace. Others dream of simpler things, respect among peers, ability to hold down a job, peace within one's life. Dreams, while they can be a great motivator, can also end up discouraging us. In this paper, I'll be looking to how dreams have been great motivators, how they can be great discouragers, and some possible cause as to the different outcomes. This will be to show people that dreams can motivate or discourage people in the right circumstances.
Oprah Winfrey grew up in abuse and poverty, but that did not stop her in being the women she is today. Oprah is one of the richest women on Earth, but not without her struggles. On top of that, Oprah is a capitalist pragmatist (Lofton, 2006). Oprah believes in a spiritual path, but one that does not concern religion (Lofton, 2006). Her religion is more about perfecting herself and trying to be the perfect human being (Lofton, 2006). Her family and past, her career, the nature of how she sees God, and the influence she has on people all influence Oprah and her worldview.
Dreams can either save or destroy a person. Everyone has dreams or ambitions they strive for and everyone gets either negatively or positively affected by their choices following this dream. People who get negatively affected as shown in Of Mice and Men usually either share their dream with too many people, people can hurt others in a way of trying to accomplish the dream and also people make their dreams a little too big. Dreams can also have a positive effect of people as shown in A Raisin in the Sun. This positive effect could be standing up for your people, moving up in society or even owning a house.
Many self-described realists dismiss this attitude as naive and unrealistic, that finding value in the pursuit of dreams is merely a self-induced delusion. Often, this perspective is obtained after much bitter suffering for little or no apparent reason, as in the case of Beneatha Younger. Already a natural cynic due to the condition of the world into which she was born, a world where poor blacks with aspirations of something better were generally doomed, she became embittered with life when her dream of becoming a doctor was seemingly shattered. From an outside perspective, it seems obvious that she reacted poorly: the money her brother lost, after all, was not hers at all but her mother's, and how she expected to finance college without the death of her father and the insurance check that followed is unclear. What is clear, however, is that the death of her long-held aspiration had a profound effect on her. “A dream glanced from afar brings disappointment when it collapses; a dream that dies w...
To begin with, one character who possesses a powerful dream is Beneatha. Beneatha's dream is to develop to be a doctor. She has great pride in doing this because not many women at this time are doctors they are only nurses but she's aspiring to be something more. She wants to be remembered for never giving up and wants to be proud of the work she will accomplish. Beneatha attempts to a lot of diverse activities to see what she likes the most. She says “ I don't fit! I-I experiment with different forms of expression.” She wants to find herself in the world. She is fearful she will miss out on something, so she tries to do everything. Beneatha does not give up on her dream to become a doctor even though it will be a very challenging task to accomplish, instead
Bumped around from relative to relative in one economically struggling neighborhood after another, and surviving tragic sexual abuse, Oprah Winfrey, an African-American girl had almost no chance to make it big. However, by age three, she was showing great potential and brilliance when she was able to read and write. At age fourteen, her strict father made education a high priority for her. Although she didn’t have a clear idea of what she wanted to do with her life, she entered into a public speaking contest, and won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, where she majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts. Winfrey was offered a job as a co-anchor for CBS, and eventually moved on to be a co-host on the television show, People are Talking.
Palms excessively sweating, body quaking in anxiousness, heart racing a million beats per minute, my mind being overthrown by the thoughts of nervousness. Just imagined being like that before the start of your Track and Field event. Having those feelings is just the normal for me. I have been doing Track and Field since 7th grade. That is 5 to 6 years of determination and commitment.
Born on January 29,1924 in Kosciusko, Mississippi born to a poor family who split apart, Oprah was forced to live with her grandmother. Being a very intelligent girl, Oprah had skipped first and second grade. At the age of six, she moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin with her mom and became very interested in reciting poetry at African American social functions. “When she visited her father in Nashville when she was 12, Winfrey won $500 for a speech she gave at his church. That very night, she made up her mind that she wanted to "be paid to talk."”(ABC_CLIO Oprah). If times weren't tough enough for a black girl, Oprah was sexually assaulted by a trusted man in the family. After moving back with her father who was a strict man with education, Oprah had won an Elks club Oratory contest. This led to her getting a job at a local radio station everyday for a half hour. The way she talked, people really enjoyed and she became more and more popular. She went on to be a co anchor on the ABC in Baltimore, later being promoted to local updates during Good Morning America, and then hosting a Baltimore morning talk show. However this wasn't enough for Oprah she desired to take the American Dream even fuller. She took over AM Chicago and made it her own show wither her own style which created over a $150 million in its first year. By 1989 The Oprah Show was bringing in over $300 million dollars a year. Being a complete natural at what she did Oprah was able to complete her American Dream. Oprah had conquered the battle against discrimination, continued to push herself even past the rape, and managed to achieve her goal. “Worth $1.5 billion dollars according to Forbes magazine, Winfrey spends countless amounts of her own money helping the less fortunate” ( ABC CLIO Oprah). SHe is one of the greatest success stories known to man and even tries to help others achieve their
That sunny, blue skied day started like any other. Waking up to go to school, pondering if I should stay in bed or get up, I chose to wake up. I went to school and nothing big happened, I had a project that was assigned to me but I did not want to start on it. Then, as the bell right for most kids to go home, I stay after to go do the one thing I love - Track and Field. I have ran Track and Field for four years before interring my junior year of high school, and this year I was told I was not going to be doing my main event because of a freshman who is running it; I was upset.
Consideration, sympathy, then consolation are few words that strike a chord when one considers Oprah Winfrey. As a good example to all individuals of any race, sexual orientation, or gathering, she has caught the hearts of a great many viewers. With her quality, excellence, and insight, Oprah has defeat various troubles that have come in her direction. Not just is she a well-known TV symbol, she is a companion to mankind. Oprah winfrey says “I don’t believe in failure” (kniffel n.d.) she is a positive person and never let negativity comes her. She uses the media to educate young people about so many things in life.
“Last race. Last chance.” I thought as me and my friend Caleb sat on the bus. We were riding to the golf course for the last cross country meet of the year. We were so excited, I felt really jittery and were already having fun playing on my phone.
Oprah Winfrey had an arduous life growing up. She lived alone with her single mother, who was perpetually working aspiring to provide for her kids, for a number of years and
