Quentin Jerome Tarantino was born on March 27, 1963 in Tennessee to Connie McHugh and Tony Tarantino. The family lived in Los Angeles, CA but the parents divorced early in their marriage and Connie took Quentin back to Tennessee. They lived there until Connie graduated from nursing school. Then they moved back to California when Quentin was three years old. Connie married two more times and both of her husbands took her son to films and movies. Sometimes the movies had adult and violent themes for a young child. When Quentin was about ten years old, he was sent to live with his Grandparents in Tennessee. Angry Outbursts Mr. Tarantino is known for his angry meltdowns and incongruous rantings. One website lists his most bizarre behavior which includes: a weird speech he gave at the 2010 Grammy’s, several interviews that basically become shouting matches, Tarantino becoming angry at a reporter and spitting on the man, and more (Tarantino Unchained, n.d.). Referral and Mental Status Exam Quentin Tarantino was referred for mental evaluation at the urging of his mother who was concerned about her son’s inconsistent behavior as well as his physical health.
Quentin is in his early 50’s. Tall and slender in his younger years, he has gained weight, especially in his abdominal region. An admitted smoker, drinker, and occasional illicit drug user, he states that his diet is not the healthiest. Although he has had girlfriends in the past, he would rather focus on his career as filmmaker than become distracted by relationships. Quentin is considered to be a creative genius and is successful at what he does. He attributes this to his intense focus on his career which includes working ten to twenty hour days. In spite of his success, he is not well liked. He is considered to be overbearing and is well known for his meltdowns and short
fuse. Quentin’s mental status exam was gained by observation during the initial interview with the clinician. He arrived clean shaven and casually, but expensively dressed. During the interview his thought processes and intellectual functioning were intact. He admits to going on rants and becoming angry when he is challenged by reporters or others who “push my buttons”. He reports that he has little tolerance for idiocy. His mood was consistent and stable during the interview with the exception of becoming agitated when discussing what “sets him off”. Quentin’s sensorium function was intact as well. He became visibly uncomfortable as the time slipped by due to his wanting to get back to his current film project. Diagnosis and Treatment Although this overtly type A patient has a history of an unstable childhood (which sometimes contributes to emotional volatility) and would seem to be obsessed with violence (as indicated by his movies), it was clear that the issue was related to health psychology and involved the physical disorder of hypertension. The immediate concern is increased risk of developing coronary heart disease. Treatment prescribed includes: biofeedback to learn how to monitor his stress, relaxation and meditation, as well as implementing nutrition and fitness programs. A complete physical with a specialized medical doctor with scheduled follow ups has been put into place. Follow up appointments have also been made with the evaluating clinician as an integrated approach to ensure the patient receives complete care.

In 2009, just seventeen years after his directorial debut, he wrote and directed his first World War II film, Inglourious Basterds. Having set a budget of 70 million, Inglourious Basterds set a domestic gross total of 120.5 million, with a difference of 50.5 million. A huge step from his first. Quentin Tarantino has proven time and time again to be one of the most confusing directors to understand when attempting to unravel the personal ideologies in his films. Each of his films deals with race, sexuality, and gender to some extent, and it is often difficult to know whether or not Tarantino is making a commentary on these things or if he truly believes much of the problematic discourse found in his films. Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 are a testament to this understanding of Tarantino’s films, as they appear to be extremely feminist films at surface level yet, upon deeper inspection, have some very problematic qualities.
