PROJECT TITLE

A Queen Victoria Market Innovation Precinct Project, Phase I: Tracking and Monitoring

PUBLIC RELEASE STATEMENT Queen Victoria Market (QVM) is the heart and soul of Melbourne, and it is the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere, where people can shop for everything from Australian fruit and vegetables, to local and imported foods [1]. In order to improve customers’ shopping experience with QVM, the market management need to better understand the market place, for example, reasons for visit and visit characteristics. Using the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) that already deployed in the market, the management will be able to improve the knowledge of customer behaviour, public safety management and optimize resources.

Video cameras are commonly used sensors with a large number of applications, ranging from surveillance to path matching [4]. Berclaz advocated that by linking object detection across frames, object tracking can be achieved in individual frames [5]. Teixeira proposed a method to use existing CCTV deployment within the environment to identify and localize people along with the aid of built-in inertial sensors on smartphone [6]. A hybrid method leverages radio frequency identification and video monitoring system to realize functions of multi-target detection and tracking, alarms and monitoring [7]. One state of the art people detection using one camera is proposed by Ren, referred to Fast-RCNN (region-based convolutional neural networks). This method enables deep-learning-based object detection system to run at 5-17 frames per second (fps) [8]. A result of people detection from a single camera using Faster- RCNN is shown in figure
