Imagine a political system where every voice and opinion truly counts, shaping the electoral system in Quebec. Did you know that Quebec’s voting system, unlike others, employs a mix of a First Past The Post system and a Proportional Representation system? This paper aims to acknowledge the excellence of Quebec’s electoral system while also recognizing two significant criticisms. This system consists of a voting institution where the population votes for a candidate. The candidate who has the most votes wins the election and gets elected to run the government. This system could also be called “winner-take-all voting”, which means that the candidate wins the elections in every riding and becomes elected. Therefore, the result doesn’t represent the whole population’s political point of view. For example, let’s say a political party has 40% of the votes while the other 60% is retributed towards the other parties, but they don’t exceed 40% of the votes of the population. That means that over 60% of the population didn’t want the party that won, but the party still won because they had a bigger vote than the others (TVO Today, 2022). This system often generates two large parties, excluding the other small parties since it can be quite hard for them to win seats. This organization can lead, firstly, to having a large amount of “wasted votes” since it isn’t proportionate and most electors feel like they don’t have a say in the political activity of their country (First Past the Post, 2019). This can also lead to making the population feel unheard of, even if they technically have the choice.
