When trying to define critical thinking you might run into some challenges along the way. Critical thinking is a widely used yet vague term that is practiced by different people in a variety of locations throughout the world. Critical thinking is a strong virtue for the majority and the worst enemy for others. Needless to say without critical thinking we would be nowhere close to where we are today pertaining to our technological and social endeavors.
The procedure of selecting classes is vital when it comes to college. Before enrolling in classes, students must critically think about their major requirements, university requirements, and any prerequisites they must complete. Students are held responsible for managing their time between classes and taking classes that will fulfill the requirements. As a student at San Jose State University, I am still struggling with picking classes because I would never put enough time to plan my schedule ahead of time. Therefore, my first year at San Jose State was not pleasant; I took classes that had a three or four hour gap and did not satisfy my major curriculum. According to Verlinden’s (2005) book, students must have “willingness to plan, which requires
For personal and professional growth, given my personality traits, I need to embrace my strengths and weaknesses. I must use my strengths to my advantage, to be more effective academically and in the workplace, but I also need to identify and try to overcome my weaknesses, especially professionally.
There are many different definitions good writing can be defined as. However, good writing can be defined as having a purpose, being organized, as well as having an individual style. For any writing, a purpose is needed to reach the audience. The purpose is to deliver a strong message to an audience so they will comprehend the material. Organizational skills are necessary to thrive in writing. The writing must be organized in a way so everyone can comprehend what is being stated. Organizational skills can go hand in hand with using proper grammar which also makes the message clear. Some writing can be extremely boring, but what separates average from good is the individual flare that person has. Everyone has a different way of writing, but how the person portrays their message will make it that much better. Overall, good, effective writing embodies purpose, organization, and an individual style.
Without thinking critically, you are only looking at the surface of things. It is easy to simply fall pray to the underhanded machinations of others. In regards to a politician's statement in the media, do you accept it at face value? Do you accept some people’s statements and not others'? Irregardless, you probably exercise at least some judgment, based on what you know about the particular person, and whether or not you generally agree with them or not.
It’s been fifteen weeks since the beginning of the semester when we were given our first critical thinking essay. Have our thoughts about critical thinking changed or remained the same throughout this semester? The idea of critical thinking has been changed for me, there is a lot more you can do with critical thinking. Critical thinking means being able to find a routine to build up your way around the barrier. It involves planning, time, and commitment. During this semester, I’ve been using planning. Without planning, you would be able to manage your time which is the secondary thing towards critical thinking. Once you done those two, you can now commit to your objectives.
When an individual has an open mind, they are seen to have the eagerness to experience new things, hear and acknowledge new ideas. Open-mindedness is one of the crucial desire of education, always puzzling but remarkably worth chasing (Dewey and Russell, as cited in, Hare, 2004). When it comes to having an open-minded, it is the virtue that avoids habit and eagerness from making individuals inadequate or afraid to entertain the idea that earlier convictions may have to be adjusted or let go of; its main point lies in battling the intolerance that comes from a belief that people’s viewpoints are certainly certain (Russell, as cited in, Hare, 2004). An open mind allows for a person to be open to being a critical thinker. A critical thinker is an individual who has the capacity to creatively think (being aware of new viewpoints and possibilities); the capacity to be analytical (inspect something in depth in order to evaluate what it is made of); the capacity to reason (to think in a logical and intricate way) and the capacity to be a problem solver (systematically taking in to mind possible solutions to an issue and selecting the best one) as said by (Wallace, Schirato & Bright, 1999). Critical thinking is a mental growth that pursues to analyse as well as examine the activity and action that an individual comes across to in life (Tsai,
To begin, I am going to write about my weaknesses and how they transitioned into strengths. First, I remember after each assignment in class was introduced I
In his essay Critical Thinking: What Is It Good For? (In Fact, What Is It), Howard Gabennesch explains the importance of critical thinking by drawing attention to how its absence is responsible for societies many ills including, but not limited to, the calamity in Vietnam. Yet, at the end of his essay, Gabennesch also mentions that, despite “the societal benefits of critical thinking, at the individual level, uncritical thinking offers social and psychological rewards of its own.”(14). Similarly, it is these rewards that, like the bait on a fishhook, often make individuals hesitant to engage in critical thinking despite the resulting harm to both them and society.
Based on my results, for my weakness I am reasonably skilled when it comes to the core ability of identifying, perceiving and expressing emotions in myself and others. I still need an improvement in them areas. Overall my strength , skills in the area of emotional intelligence aid me in the process of reading others, understanding how they feel, and effectively identifying my own emotions. These skills form the basis of your ability to relate to the emotions of others as well as your ability to understand yourself. My weakness surprised me a little because I thought I was good at identifying emotions in myself and
My strength that I find I have in my mental and emotional health is my ability to cope with the issue in my life either through seeking help with someone like a friend, my sister, or my mom or by figuring it out myself; I never like to bottle up my problems until the pressure gets the best of me. If I can’t seek the help of others and I feel overwhelmed then writing things down on paper helps me relieve the stress of my problems. One weakness in my mental and emotional health is that I do not always feel great about myself. I overthink the things I have done in the past and get mad at myself for some inconsequence, insignificant, embarrassing event. I have the weakness of not being able to let go of my past mistakes and I hold them over myself which sometimes makes me upset. I need to learn to let go of my past and to not get mad at myself over irrelevant things.
I believe that life is a learning experience and being able to recognize our own strengths and weaknesses can help us become better individuals in anything we choose to do, whether it is positive abilities and skills that can help achieve our goals or negative personal areas that need improvement. Knowing yourself and what you can do, can help you recognize and overcome your weaknesses.
