Morally right things by Utilitarianism would results the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people. The most plausible ethical theory I think is Qualitative Hedonistic Utilitarianism derived by John Stuart Mill. Mill’s theory is basically same with Bentham’s Utilitarianism, however, added criterion of qualities between the pleasures. Intellectual thought, artistic feeling and knowledge has higher quality than physical pleasure like sexual intercourse, satiety. Aristotelian ethics claims intellectual action like deep thinking gives pleasure to human-being then the actual action comes after, however being good does not always make good result. The most common thought is about egoism of Utilitarianism. By the principle of utilitarianism, the theory makes result for the most people, but the rest of people would not get pleasure like others. And this can be worse for Qualitative Hedonic Utilitarianism because this theory should consider the quality difference between lots of pleasures. Second argument is about practicability of Utilitarianism. As Utilitarianism focuses on the result, not just doing moral things or think, identifying good things before the actual decision is too hard to make good decision. Last argument is that process is ignored too much. Utilitarianism only focuses on the result regardless of the procedures. Counter argument for the first criticism can be explained by the principle of Utilitarianism. Number one principle for the Utilitarianism is to get the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people. Some might get disadvantage by the decision, but it was the best decision to think as the whole. None of the choice would be satisfied by all of the people. Counterstatement for the second argument is that to think more complicated is worth enough to make decision late.
