The purpose of government and the role of government in society is an ongoing debate that people have been arguing for decades. Some people question the need for a government others deem it to be a necessity. A governing body is what gives a country organization, a foundation, and inevitable prevents mass chaos. In the United States we have a democratic republic. This is a form of government where power is vested in the people, who can either rule directly or through elected representatives. Many would agree that the United States has created an effective government because of its ability to evolve and even change when needed in order to protect its growing and diverse population. This is because the legislative branch has the ability to make …show more content…
A military is a necessity for any government to ensure that it can protect its citizens physically and also protect their freedoms as well. In the article “The Declaration of Independence” the author states, “He has at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation, and tyranny” (Jefferson 454). It is a nation's duty to protects its citizens from attacks such as this where other nations try to implement cruelty on its people. In addition, a strong economy is imperative for a country because its is what allows a country to not only survive but to thrive. It gives a country the ability to provide goods and services to its citizens. In the article “Political Civility” the author states, “[The] classes in the United States are mobile, not static, which is the marxist view. That is: Immigrants came and continue to come here penniless and can (and do) become rich; the nerd makes a trillion dollars; the single mother, penniless and ignorant of English sends her two sons to college” (Marmet 449). This shows that the United States has created a system in which any citizens can succeed and have financial stability. These two things combined to provide a strong national security in which the citizens of a country are protected in foreign and domestic affairs both militarily and
According to Gregory Mantsios many American people believed that the classes in the United States were irrelevant, that we equally reside(ed) in a middle class nation, that we were all getting richer, and that everyone has an opportunity to succeed in life. But what many believed, was far from the truth. In reality the middle class of the United States receives a very small amount of the nation's wealth, and sixty percent of America's population receives less than 6 percent of the nation's wealth, while the top 1 percent of the American population receives 34 percent of the total national wealth. In the article Class in America ( 2009), written by Gregory Mantsios informs us that there are some huge differences that exist between the classes of America, especially the wealthy and the poor. After
The U.S. Government is among the most successful governments known to man currently. The U.S. government is made up of a democracy, but this democracy was not put together on its own. It was first compiled by many other societies but mainly two in particular- the Greek and the Romans. These two historical powerhouses were and still are mainly known for their armies, agriculture, and their governments. These two formed the U.S. government that the world knows and fears and respects today.
In Mantsios’ “Class in America” he provides us with four myths about the United States. In one of these myths the idea is brought up that the United States is, at its core, a classless society. It is also states that whether rich or poor, everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. The myth also states that health care and education are provided to everyone regardless of their financial stability. This idea about a classless society is exactly what Mantsios claims it to be, a myth. It is untrue to state that everyone is equal in the eyes of the law, and to believe that whatever differences exist in financial standing are insignificant. There are clear distinctions between different groups of people depending on their economic and social standing.
Since the Constitutional convention the government of the Unites States has being improving the government system. The government has many progressiveness, it went from an authoritarian country to a self-governed country by the people. The politicians has being changing the structure of the government system to a better a much better version of the last one making it a more fair system for the people. For instance, during the convention in Philadelphia congress had develop a more effective and unified constitution than the past. They started the changes of the system to a more complex government system that benefited the people and the states. For example, the congress came up with the idea of making an upper house for the senate and a lower house for the House of Representatives along with the Great Compromise that gave the president a substantial power over the government. The congress did this because after the Americ...
We often wonder about the importance of government. Is it necessary? Does it really benefit society? The answer is yes. Many countries have diverse forms of government such as totalitarian, monarchy, theocracy, and much more. The United States of America specifically runs a democratic type of government. A democratic government gives power to the people. Citizens over the age of eighteen are allowed to elect leaders based on their individual opinions through voting rights. The main purpose of the American government is, to protect people’s inalienable rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness as our Founding Fathers intended.
The legislative, executive, and judicial branches represent the constitutional infrastructure foreseen by the Founding Fathers for our nation 's governing body. Together, they work to maintain a system of lawmaking and administration based on checks and balances, and separation of powers intended to make certain that no individual or embodiment of government ever becomes too controlling. America is governed by a democratic government or a democracy which is a government by the people, in which the power is established in the people themselves. The people then elect representatives who carry out their power in a free electoral system. The United States government’s basic claim is to serve the people and only through a combined effort can we
It is believed that human beings reach their highest levels of morality and virtue by participating in government. 6) It would only make sense to create a government for the people, by the people. But in order to limit the government and protect the rights of citizens, the new government would have to consist of a checks and balances type of system. This is the reason for the three separate branches of government: executive, judiciary and legislative.
In May of 1787, in the city of Philadelphia, the delegates from all of the thirteen states held a meeting in order to make a better union. The end result was the Constitution of the United States. The delegates discussed which form of government would be the best suited for both the security, and the freedom that many had wanted to add to this new government. The delegates had denied both the confederal and the unitary forms of the new government for the new form which is called Federalism. Which was to be described as the constitutional relationship between the United States and the Federal government. Federalism is different from the other two types of government, unlike the unitary form of government, which is ruled by the central government,
Democracy has been the root of a limited government, the system of which government powers are distributed so that one group of leaders do not have too much influence. The limited government has been structured to keep peace amongst all parties that are involved in the government. And under the U.S. Constitution, citizens are given ultimate power by their right to choose their representatives through the democratic process of voting. Each levels of the government are limited as they have their own responsibilities. The city government has the most local level of government as the residents elect a city council and mayor to represent their interest at the city level. All city governments establish housing and health regulations, and are responsible
The United States government braces its power among three powerful branches, legislative, executive and judicial. These branches interact with one another to establish authority that is strong, yet equal to have power over the country. Each branch pursues certain responsibilities and duties to operate in an efficient and effective manner in which society upholds. The executive, legislative and judicial branches all interact amid each other to validate accuracy of the nation’s most powerful law of the land, the Constitution. It is important to know how these branches interact with each other to learn how a bill becomes a law. Reflecting on how the three branches promote a balance of power that is constructive to include the agendas and electoral roles that also plays a vast part in the government’s operation.
When the United States of America’s government was first created there were many arguments about the jobs it would have and how much power it would possess. The first document that set the foundation for the national government was the Articles of Confederation. However, it had many weaknesses and denied the government the power to levy taxes and regulate commerce. In addition to denying the national government essential powers, it did not provide for a judiciary branch. Many of the political leaders realized that the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation were issues that needed to be addressed and resolved. As the leaders began to revise the Articles of Confederation, a better solution began to take shape: the Constitution. However,
Each type of government holds different views as to the role the leaders and citizens should perform in their country .Different types of government include, oligarchy where the government is run by the best leaders, Tyranny, where they believe those in power should have complete control over its people. In the United States of America, we believe in democracy, rule by the majority. The main problem with our type of government is maintaining it. Our government and its citizens have lost sight of their roles and responsibilities, in government.
The framers of the United States Constitution formed a vision creating a proper government. Their goals were to establish a strong government that met the nation’s needs. A government that would not threaten the existence of the separate states but establish a system of government, where power is divided between the national government and the states. The government would also not threaten liberty. However, it would establish checks and balances. They wanted to establish a government that would be based on the consent of the nation’s people by establishing a voting system to elect public officials (Patterson, 2013).
The three branches of government have different responsibilities that intertwine and have developed over time. Through the learning curve, laws, policies, and the articles have changed in order to improve the country and make the nation more united. The rights of citizens became an important aspect to show equality, even if total equality has not been achieved yet. Although each branch of government has alternate responsibilities, the system of checks and balances works towards keeping each branch in place. However, through these developments, corruptness has taken place in the government and has prevented beneficial change from impacting the society. Due to this, there is ambivalence involving the necessity of the Congress. Change and learning
The founders utilized several sources to establish the experimental government of the United States, and took away substantial principles. Each contributed through shedding light on past experiences, which allowed the founders to correct their mistakes in the Constitution. Additionally, governments that were recognized to succeed exist in parts of the Constitution as well as the government. Specifically, ancient civilizations provided principles such as republicanism, popular sovereignty, and checks and balances. Republicanism and popular sovereignty are America’s primary government style represented through a democracy, and checks and balances are regularly used in the branches to balance power.
