Deception, the act of causing someone to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid. When some authors write short stories they might incorporate deception to increase the quality of their stories. The authors would add a twist, a sense of danger or even increasing the risk to make their stories more fascinating. In Jay Bonansinga’s “And Then… Pull in Your Readers With an Irresistible Plot Twist” he gives an example of when deception is in a story and says “king of interesting, but nothing special. And then. And then. And then! You read chapter 5”(Bonansinga 1). For example in W.W. Jacobs’s short story“The Monkey's Paw,” The white family was struggling and needed help. One night they were sitting home and was visited by an Indian man who gave them a paw of a monkey that would grant 3 wishes but with a price. A reader may have some curiosity after reading this, wondering what would happen if they would use it. The family uses the paw for 200 pounds to help with a bill, but like everything this has a price. After the wish the family then loses their son in a accident at work and they will be receiving 200 pounds in compensation. Striking to the audience that a loved one would be taken away after The White Family finds a loophole in their life. The family uses the paw again to then wish for their son back alive but, Herbert was no the same as once he was. This scenario is relatable to the audience because it shows how someone will take shortcuts to reach a goal but, does not know how to face the consequences. Seeing how the family would do anything to get their son back, even wishing for his return with the same tool that might have killed him shows that they would anything to get their son back like a mother who loses a son. Moreover, deception allows an author to gain the reader’s attention. In Jay Bonansinga’s text “And Then… Pull in Your Readers With an Irresistible Plot Twist,” he analyzes a plot twist starting with a plot point. In the text Bonansinga talks s about the build up and then the twist “Kind of interesting, but nothing special. And Then. And Then You Read Chapter 5...You’re up till 4am. reading the darn thing (Bonansinga 1). He gives an example of when the story becomes very interesting and makes the reader question what’s next? It gives the audience a need to find out what’s gonna happen next or as Bonansinga would say “And Then.” An example is in “The Monkey’s paw how it starts slow and the reader is just
The diverse alternation of point of views also provides the story an effective way to reach out to readers and be felt. The characterisation is effectively done and applied as Sam, Grace, and the other supporting characters play individual, crucial roles in the course of the story. All the elements of a typical young adult novel, consisting of a gap-filled relationship between children and parents, emotion-driven teenagers, and a unique conflict that makes the book distinct from fellow novels, combined with the dangerous consequences of the challenges the couple encounter, make the book different from all other of the same genre. The plot unfolds slowly giving readers enough time to adjust and anticipate the heavy conflict when it arises. It has gotten us so hooked but the only thing we could possibly dislike about it was the slow pace of plot. The anticipation was too much to handle and we were practically buzzing and bouncing to know how the story turns out as we read. It builds the anticipation, excitement, thrill, sadness, grief, loss, and longing in such an effective way to entice and hook readers further into the world of Sam and

Deception-the act of deceiving; state of being deceived; artifice practiced; fraud; double-dealing; to mislead the mind of; to impose on; to delude; fraud; guile; cunning (Webster Dictionary). Deception is universal and serves many purposes. Deception can be used to hurt or protect, depending on the motives of the deceptor. In Orson Scott Card's novel, Ender's Game, deception plays many roles. The main use of deception is the adults versus the children. Early on in the novel it is indicated that Ender already realizes adults lie when the subject of the monitor being removed is discussed. The adults are also deceptive when they remove the monitor and allow Ender to think he was not accepted into the program when in fact they just wanted to see how he would behave without the monitor.
What the author is doing is letting the reader foreshadow. A technique which creates suspense, a vital element in any action story. The author then explained what was being hinted at;
It is true that in all great literature. Clues which later seem obvious are often undetected until the story’s plot is resolved. The reader is unaware of the foreshadowing until the plot comes together. Ambrose Bierces " An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and " A Horseman In The Sky" identify literary elements supporting this thought.
Deception as an element can be presented in various forms. One may choose to hide their true self for specific intriguing motives in life. A theme identified in "The Possibility of Evil" by Shirley Jackson and "A Bolt of White Cloth" by Leeon Rooke is appearance can be used to deceive ones true self and morals for an intriguing motive. The narrator’s father is being freed from slavery after the civil war, leads a quiet life. On his deathbed, the narrator’s grandfather is bitter and feels as a traitor to the blacks’ common goal. He advises the narrator’s father to undermine the white people and “agree’em to death and destruction (Ellison 21)” The old man deemed meekness to be treachery. The narrator’s father brings into the book element of emotional and moral ambiguity. Despite the old man’s warnings, the narrator believes that genuine obedience can win him respect and praise.
It is easier to grasp a meaning of this line further along in the book.
That, like unreliable narrators, individuals often ‘lie’ to themselves in order to cover up the actual
Further , it was also due to a small truth that would cover a big lie. An instance, is that a woman could say that a muffin looks pretty. These lies women tell could be risky ´, but they are used in order to not hurt the person who is receiving the lie. This was also noticed in Meyer's ted talk when she mentioned when there were two patterns of deceptions. The first one was an interview that was conducted with Bill clinton . The tell tales of his interview showed that he used a non contacted denial and a distanced language. The second deception is that liars are known to freeze their upper
Finally, through symbolism the novels truly come alive. The symbolism present gives the reader a clear depiction of the cruelty that is to befall both men. It is truly tragic how close these horrific stories are, a sad testament to dark chapters in time honored establishments, American economy and Christian missionaries. If these are the consequences of such highly thought of establishments, is there anyway to stop oppression from overcoming the world? It tends to make one think.

However, Hassan was not there simply to sympathize with Colin, he was there on a mission. “You have a very complicated problem with a very simple solution” Hassan said (Green 11).
