Scolding my father as a young girl for littering made me realize how important public health is to me. I carried this passion on through high school and into my undergraduate schooling. I am now an 8 hour drive from my hometown so I could study a discipline that is very near and dear to my heart. Being a public health major at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has taught me more than I could have imagined. It has fueled my passion for pubic health, specifically in environmental health, global health, and community development. My father always pushed me to do my best growing up, and I credit my good grades to him because of that. When he passed away my junior year of high school, it took a toll on my family both emotionally and financially. My mother was laid off not long after that and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to attend college because of it. Thankfully, after applying for many scholarships and being offered multiple grants, I am able to pursue my dream of becoming a public health professional. I am still trying to determine what I specifically want to do within public health as a future career. I believe that the summer Public Health Research internship at Washington University will give me a new perspective on public health and lead me to a potential future career. In March of 2018, I will be traveling with around 10 other UAB students to Kenya to work with girls who have been affected by female genital mutilation and early forced marriage from the Maasai Tribe. While there, we will assist in providing education to young women on their rights and facilitate better access to education. I strive to become more culturally competent and have a better understanding of the struggles people face related to gender disparity and inequality.
