The Psychology of Procrastination According to the Association For Psychological Science, twenty percent of people in the world are chronic procrastinators (Jaffe, 2013). According to those numbers, there are just under 1.5 billion people in the world who are chronic procrastinators, which is almost 5 times the population of the United States of America. With people procrastinating in the billions, there are a couple questions that need to be answered, such as what is procrastination, why do people procrastinate, is procrastination helpful or harmful, and what is the solution for procrastination. What is procrastination? According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, procrastination is defined as “to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done” (2017). Most people believe that there is no such thing as the fear of success, but they could not be further from the truth. Denis Waitley stated that “Procrastination is the fear of success. People procrastinate because they are afraid of the success that they know will result if they move ahead now. Because success is heavy, it carries a responsibility with it, it is much easier to procrastinate and live on the “someday I’ll philosophy”” (Waitley, 2009). The reason people fear success is because they know that when they succeed, they will get a lot more responsibility. They don’t want to gain this increased responsibility, so they procrastinate and fear the success that they know will bring more work to them. For example, an overweight person might procrastinate about losing weight because they know it would be hard to keep their new weight. This causes many people to not be able to gain what they want to because of procrastination, making the fear of success a strong theory to why people
