Since I can remember, I’ve had things to do and I put them off until the last minute. Sometimes putting things off until the last minute works out. At least half the time, assignments that I do the night before earn passing grades. On the other hand, there are plenty of times when I’ve avoided doing an assignment or studying for a test and not only am I a nervous bundle of anxiety, but I also end up bombing the test or getting a bad grade on the assignment. When it comes to procrastination, I’ve always had one or two friends who I could commiserate with-other people, just like me, who wait until the last minute to take care of something and then suffer all of the negative consequences that come along with that behavior. This happens with me because of confusion or misunderstanding. Some students who are less motivated will procrastinate until the last minute. For example: they procrastinate on studying for exams, group projects, or writing academic papers. I know that when I procrastinate a lot, I will just turn in whatever I have because I don't want to fail the class. Erica Gordon (2016) stated that people do this because of “fear of success, feelings of self-doubt, lack of self-esteem.”
I know I am a procrastinator, but the question still stands, among the everyday common people, to busy workers and college students, Is procrastination natural? What is the definition of natural? Well, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary natural is defined as being in accordance with or determined by nature.
I believe we all procrastinate. We have all put something off at one point in our lives, no matter how big or small. We’ve done it. I think that’s just part of being human especially if we have a lot of other things on our plates. Some people might ask: If it’s natural then why do some people do it and others don’t? In his TedTalk, Urban then goes on to explain a second type of procrastination, where there is no deadlines. For example: hanging out with family, exercise, health management.
