Psychoanalytic Criticism to Carmilla Vampire fiction is one of the most interesting genres in literature today. Every vampire story has a division between romance and death. When analyzing a gothic novella, the reader conveys feelings of suspense and thrill. There are many different literary criticisms that can be applied to vampire stories. When you study the literature extensively, you identify that the story isn’t just haunting undertones. Sheridan Le Fanu’s vampiric story Carmilla associates these personality components to the individual characters in the story. After reading the text, it would seem elementary to identify the vampire, Carmilla as a character who shares the id quality. Her primitive instincts comes before humanity and her ability to truly love someone. Her manipulative nature is very noticeable and she is an expert at seduction. She casted a spell on Laura to keep her indulged in the relationship, despite how wrong Laura felt rebelling against her belief system. Carmilla scorns Christianity and her personal ideology is unprincipled. Carmilla’s personality is problematic not because of her sinister features but because it postulates female sexuality as obstructing rather than emancipating. In John Irving's novel titled, A Prayer for Owen Meany, suspenseful events are of abundance, and there are multiple ways the author creates this suspense. Among these methods of creating suspense, four that stand out are the use of setting, the pace of the story, the involvement of mysteries to be solved, and the ability of the reader to easily identify and sympathize with the protagonist. By placing a character in a gloomy or solitary place, uncomfortable feelings are created, which append to the suspense. Pace and structure of the story also play into the foundation of suspense, as shorter sentences and stronger, more cutting verbs and adjectives are often used to keep the reader highly interested and reading at a rapid speed. Of course, suspense could not be considered what it is if there were no mystery involved. The element of not knowing what is in store for the future and having the urge to find out is the essence of suspense. Also, if the reader cannot easily relate to and sympathize with the character in the suspenseful situation, a loss of interest can arise, and therefore spoil the spirit of the tension. Uncomfortable settings, pace and structure, use of mysteries, and capability to relate to the main character are four techniques that John Irving uses to create suspense.

Edgar Allan Poe, often honored with being called the king of horror and gothic poetry, published “The Fall of House Usher” in September of 1839. Carmilla is an example of a woman who loves her food far too much. Carmilla is consumed entirely by her food, even sleeping in a coffin of blood: “The limbs were perfectly flexible, the flesh elastic; and the leaden coffin floated with blood, in which to a depth of seven inches, the body lay immersed” (Le Fanu 102). There exists a unique relationship between the vampire and their victims. Food becomes defined in terms of victimhood, distinctly separated from humanity’s general consumption of meat. The need for human victims makes hunting synonymous with courtship, as intense emotional connections are established between the vampiress and her food. As seen in the intense relationship developed between Laura and Carmilla, the vampire is “prone to be fascinated with an engrossing vehemence, resembling the passion of love, by particular persons” (105). For Carmilla, cruelty and love are inseparable (33). The taking of the victims’ blood for sustenance is a highly sexualized exchange of fluids from one body to another. The act of consumption is transformed into an illicit carnal exchange between the hunter and the hunted.

Regardless of the length or plot of a piece of writing, tone can be used to color and illuminate words and facts, to make them more than static pieces of text; it can make them into dynamic works of literature.
Edgar Allan Poe has a unique writing style that uses several different elements of literary structure. He uses intrigue vocabulary, repetition, and imagery to better capture the reader’s attention and place them in the story. Edgar Allan Poe’s style is dark, and his is mysterious style of writing appeals to emotion and drama. What might be Poe’s greatest fictitious stories are gothic tend to have the same recurring theme of either death, lost love, or both. His choice of word draws the reader in to engage them to understand the author’s message more clearly. Authors who have a vague short lexicon tend to not engage the reader as much.
