Prose Roleplay: The Unknown Medium When you think of the term ‘roleplaying’ many things might come to mind: The man in his early 30’s still living in his parent’s basement – licking the nacho cheese crumbs from his fingers whilst playing World of Warcraft. The girl desperately trying to keep her fingers out of harm’s way as she frantically tries to finish her costume before the big LARP event at noon. The group of close friends sitting down after weeks of planning to finally start a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Or even something less “kosher.” But what you don’t quite hear mentioned is the subject of prose roleplay. It is my intention to fill in that void by sifting through the sand -brushing off misnomers and stereotypes – to reveal the hidden jewel that is prose roleplay. Now you might ask, “What exactly is prose roleplay?” Prose roleplay, self-explained, is a form of roleplaying in which others write out their character’s actions, speech and other mannerisms. Many, many people input characters toward one common storyline. Think of it as a book series such as Game of Thrones, where each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character. It is the same with prose [RP], except each character is written by a different author entirely. In a country like the United States of America, with a history of every individual having an equal opportunity to reach their dreams, it becomes harder and harder to grasp the reality that equal opportunity is diminishing as the years go on. The book Our Kids by Robert Putnam illustrates this reality and compares life during the 1950’s and today’s society and how it has gradually gotten to a point of inequality. In particular, he goes into two touching stories, one that shows the changes in the communities we live in and another that illustrates the change of family structure. In the end he shows how both stories contribute to the American dream slipping away from our hands.
The ability to make the reader immersed in the story and the main character is the best thing to have when writing a piece. It helps the reader decide whether to keep reading or not. This ability is known as imagery. Imagery is writing with metaphors and the five sense, which creates a scene for the reader. Imagery is basically the way the author shows the reader what the main character or narrator is seeing. Janet Burroway, author of “Imaginative Writing”, which is a book about writing and the components of it, states that Image is, “An image is a word or series of words that evokes one or more of the five senses.” (Burroway, 15) Imagery is very important and good authors know how to use it to add more meaning and power to their literature.
There are many devices within the craft of writing that writers use to help them convey their messages. Among these include what characters they use and how they act, what setting they put their characters in, what types of symbols are use, and many others. They can go even farther into each section with how much information they give us, or how much they make us fill in with our own interpretation or imagination. The writer's choice of characters is a main part of the story, for it is these people that "tell" the story and which we relate it to. The characters' descriptions and their actions are what we picture in our minds. Although they need the other devices to complete the story, the authors use of characters can be what makes or breaks the story. There are many different types of characters that writers can use to help them distribute their message. Robert Frost uses nature as a character in his poem "Once By The Pacific," while Shirley Jackson uses the members of a small town to tell her story in The Lottery. While each is different, they both serve their intended purpose - to tell us a story.
A traditional text is usually written in the sequence of happenings. As Aristotle mentioned, the order of a unified plot is a chronological happenings of beginning, middle, and end. The beginning is the main action that makes readers follow the story more interestedly; the middle presumes what has occurred in the past and requires something to end; and the end comes after all the occurrences to sum up and finish the story (Abrams 161). A narrative is specified to amuse, to attract, and grasp a reader’s attention. The types of narratives are fictitious, real or unification or both. However, they may consist of folk tale stories, mysteries, science fiction; romances, horror stories, adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical narratives, ballads, slice of life, and personal experience (“Narrative,” 2008). Therefore, narrative text has five shared elements. These are setting, characters, plot, theme, and vocabulary (“Narrative and Informational Text,” 2008). Narrative literature is originally written to communicate a story. Therefore, narrative literature that is written in an excellent way will have conflicts and can discuss shared aspects of human occurrence.

The development of play throughout an individual life is essential in providing the necessary methods to foster growth and development in critical developmental areas. According to Davies (2011), play is instrumental in providing a bridge for the child to transition from a toddler with a limited capacity to understand the world into a child in the middle years who can think logically. Although Rose is submissive at the beginning of the play, she becomes a powerful woman at the end. Rose proves this when she decides to raise Raynell and by becoming involved in the church.

Vivian takes us on a journey through different classrooms around the world, in order to explore the impressive language of children during their free time, role-playing, and storytelling. In these classrooms, Vivian records the children’s stories and how they interact with each other, in order to grasp an understanding of the meaning that lies in their fantasy play. It entails mostly the use o language skills, listening and speaking but not reading, writing or memorizing.
