Paper 1: Ex-offender Reentry This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of ex-offender reentry. Factors contributing to recidivism include law enforcement officers mistrust for reentry prisoners; lack of familial and community support; difficulties gaining employment due to criminal background, obstacles pertaining to housing. Factors that may reduce recidivism, increase public safety and facilitate ex-offender reintegration transitions, as well as detrimental factors of recidivism are examined. Lastly, the important role of parole officers for ex-offenders and the level of supervision ex-offenders receive are also explored in this paper.

Reentry programs have been developed nationwide to address offender needs and smooth the transition from prison into the community. Reentry programs are initiatives taken to ensure that ex-offenders successfully transition into law-abiding members of their communities. Studies have revealed that ex-offender reentry is a process that all individuals transitioning from prison to the community experience. Systematic cooperation between the criminal justice and social service providers is required to address the needs of offenders and their communities, and ensure successful reentry (Bond & Gittell, 2010). There are strength-based therapy programs established for prisoners prior to release attending to their level of risks, need and responsivity in the community that have proven to be effective. For example, in Lowell 1999, the Lowell Police Department (LPD) participated in the Department of Justice’s National Reentry Partnership Initiative Meeting, and was one of eight cities chosen to implement a reentry program.
