In the middle of most social problems in America, one thing will stand at the center of attention; our President. In 2008, the campaign slogan for the Obama administration was “Change We Can Believe In.” Now with the recent mid-term elections, it seems like America is still looking for change we can believe in. Considering the last four presidents have switched between Republican and Democrat, maybe the change isn’t going to another big party but a third party for president. The most popular third parties we have seen are the Libertarian, Green, and Constitution parties. While there have been some glimpses of success for those parties, third parties have a hard time getting off the ground. The major issues they face are a lack of funding for …show more content…
Who wouldn’t be? The national debt over the last 14 years has gone from around 5 trillion to nearly 18 trillion dollars, America has also been in some questionable wars over that time period, and all that citizens see on the news is bickering between the two big parties. This is the kind of stuff that would get normal people fired from their jobs. Even though the numbers seems to point that people want something different, it doesn’t seem like third parties can get off the …show more content…
If you are leaning towards Republican, Fox News may be more for you and if you lean toward the Democratic side of things, NBC is the go to channel. It is clear cut when you watch television that the media seems to create a divide and most major sources have a hard time being “bi-partisan”. “Media reinforces the two party system. The two parties are the power brokers in the American system of government.” Politics has become a business and the third parties are like the small mom and pop shops who cannot seemingly stand against the much larger candidacy. What people in America say to those who vote for third parties are “you are throwing your vote away” or “you are voting for the other guy”. It is not your voice being heard when you are voting third party to some people. The media plays a major role in those feelings towards third parties. They call third party candidate efforts as tilting at windmills or futile. It can leave one to wonder if the media just doesn’t want them to be heard. When something makes people money, you buy into it and don’t let it go and the two major parties are bringing in ratings and money for big time media. Something the third parties can’t
Despite what’s against 3rd parties they still do manage to make some important contributions in our political system. One contribution is there ability to shift other party’s views along the political spectrum slightly.
This has been one of the most fascinating political seasons in recent history. The level of discourse and potential scandals on both sides has increased my attention level. Rather you support either of these candidates, both the fringe candidates from the left and the right both have struck a chord with a lot of people. Whether either of them wins their party’s nomination and becomes the president is still left to be decided. Mainstream political pundits and major social institutions have either condemned or flatly said that some of these candidates’ proposals are not feasible, but to the electorate that doesn’t seem to matter. There has been a lot of commotion about a brokered Republican convention even though it seems that there will be one
I simply like how the Peace and Freedom Party focuses on a broad scale of issues and they go into depth about wanting to have peace and freedom for everyone and protecting and preserving Earth for as long as we all shall live. Also, I like how the peace and freedom party doesn’t simply focus on the large issues that attract people to them, but it seems like they actually want to make a change in the way people think about each other and instead of fighting one another they want people of all races, genders, sexual orientations and more to come together and help each other out. Overall, this is an amazing third party that I would join because they want the same thing I do for this state and eventually for the country as a whole and they not only concentrate on big issues, but small ones too. The democratic and republican parties share some differences and similarities to the freedom and peace party, but The Freedom and Peace party is like having the best of both worlds for me and that is what makes it appealing to
During the late 19th and early 20th century both the Populist Party and Progressive movement wanted to preserve some things, while also addressing the need for reform. Although many of the ideas and goals of these “Third parties” were initially not legislated and considered far-fetched, many of these ideas later became fundamental laws throughout American history.
Media concentration allows news reporters to fall victim to source bias, commercial impulse, and pack journalism. Together, all three of the aforementioned factors become known as horse race journalism, a cause for great concern in campaign media. In complying with horse race journalism, media outlets exclude third party candidates, reinforce the idea that politics is merely a game, and dismiss issues that directly affect voters and their day to day lives. Through horse race journalism, the media is mobilized in impeding an active form of the democratic debate in American politics. Even across the wide range of human values and beliefs, it is easy to see that campaign media coverage must be changed, if not for us, then for our children. It is imperative that we discern the flaws of the media and follow our civic duty to demand better media
In the United States there are only two main political parties to choose from. The two main parties are the Democrats and the Republicans. There are also many other political parties to choose from which are called third parties. Third parties may include political parties such as the Socialist Equality Party and the Peace and Equality party. People can choose to be a part of any party they want but most go with the common two main parties the Democrats and Republicans. Democrats and Republicans have many similarities and differences. These mainly occur in international, social, economic, and domestic issues.
Some of the more recent, and grossly biased broadcasts, were from the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. Historically, the Fox News Channel is known to lean heavily to the right, or on the Republican spectrum. President Barack Obama’s political party is widely known to the public as being democratic. Statistically, to this day according to studies over 17 million households receive some form of the Fox News Channel (Auletta). The Fox News Channel is published through a number of different channels to its viewers.

A platform of “A Vote For Every American” should pass the lips of every elected official until this problem is rectified. Americans must work together to solve this problem, allowing a new and better system to give way to a fair and just system of electing the next United States’ President. Today, political parties can be seen throughout everyday life, prevalent in various activities such as watching television, or seeing signs beside the road while driving. These everyday occurrences make the knowledge of political parties commonly known, especially as the two opposing political parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. Republican and Democrats have existed for numerous years, predominantly due to pure tradition, and the comfort of the ideas each party presents. For years, the existence of two political parties has dominated the elections of the president, and lower offices such as mayor, or the House of Representatives. Fundamentally, this tradition continues from the very emergence of political parties during the election of 1796, principally between Federalist John Adams and Anti-federalist Thomas Jefferson. Prior to this election people unanimously conformed to the ideas of one man, George Washington, and therefore did not require the need for political parties.1 However, following his presidency the public was divided with opposing opinions, each arguing the best methods to regulate the country. Ultimately, the emergence of different opinions regarding the future of the United States involving the economy, foreign relations, ‘the masses,’ and the interpretation of the Constitution, led to the two political parties of the 1790s and the critical election of 1800.
I was not reelected and I actually did very poorly. I attribute this failure for being apart of the minor party, and being unable to push the bills that were important to my district. My district, party and personal views all aligned for the most part. The only deciding factor was what bills were most important to our state and which ones had the most likeliness to pass. The one thing I would change is being on the majority side. We had basically no power to pass any bills because, they had all the votes. There was a massive rift not only between the parties but also inside the parties. We had some people who were more loyal to there state and others who were more loyal to the party. Both authors argued compelling points but Alex Berezow makes it clear that partisanship and the huge amount of division in the country is hurting America not helping it. Matthew Yglesias claims that the pros of partisanship are that elections are predictable and government policies easy to understand but what he does not include is how the pros do not outweigh the cons. I agree with Berezow that America has been split and is continuing to divide and grow angry toward one another which is creating an abundant amount of problems. Berezow explains, “A recent CBS poll showed that 44% of Americans blame Republicans for the shutdown and 35% blame President Obama and the Democrats. A paltry 17% blame both” (Berezow). Americans quickly jumped to conclusion
The Democratic Party, Republican Party, and Libertarian Party each have individual beliefs and opinions about various topics impacting our current society. By analyzing their platforms, we can gain a better understanding on how they approach these various topics and what their goals are for furthering our state. Through my analysis, I found some interesting beliefs within the Texas Democratic Party's platform, whose central principle is that “government exists to achieve together what we cannot achieve as individuals.”
